Door lock broken...94' TK. July 30, 2025, 01:53:22 pm Door lock...94' TK.The coach door lock is broken, and I can not open the door. The silver door handle is limp and is not connected. The lock is in the open position, but I can not open the door. Considering using the sawzall to cut off the silver handle and hopefully gain access to at least open the door, remove all the old hardware, and install a new door latch?Thoughts.. Thank you, Chris
Re: Door lock broken...94' TK. Reply #1 – July 30, 2025, 02:26:46 pm Hi Chris; You can't get a new door latch mechanism. Bargeman quit making them in 2006, and all of the spare locks and parts have been used up. Go in the front driver or passenger door and open the coach door from the inside. Four screws from the inside remove the cover over the 'guts'. Unscrew the black knob that locks it from the inside. Many times it is a broken spring inside that can be replaced by a hardware store new spring. RonB 1 Likes
Re: Door lock broken...94' TK. Reply #2 – July 30, 2025, 06:52:35 pm Ron, Thanks for your fast response.Due to the screen, I am only able to access two of the screws because of the screen door. Both screws were removed without any problem. Accessing the other screws is an issue. Once I can access the guts of the locking mechanism, I will determine if a new entire door lock or possibly just springs.I was thinking of using a Sawzall to cut out the door lock....Somehow, I need to get into the coach.
Re: Door lock broken...94' TK. Reply #3 – July 31, 2025, 11:54:36 am Hi Chris, The paddle on the outside should still move the bolt to open the door from the outside. You always have the cab doors for exit/entrance. Replacing the door lock would involve changing the design and construction of both the door, its insides and the framework and door frame to match the newer locks and mechanisms. I suspect it was a change to Federal laws about safety of occupants of a moving vehicle involving accidental operation of the door in motion, relating to fatalities of motorhome occupants. The doors changed to wider versions during the years. You might be able to find 'junk' parts in wrecking yards. I'm sure that the rareness of older parts that still work, compared to a lot of us still using our antiquated motorhomes, has led to a lot of compromised work arounds. Re: Door lock broken...94' TK. Reply #4 – July 31, 2025, 12:48:38 pm Ron,By pulling on the door handle from the inside, I was able to move something that released the door latch bolt. I am going to get some grease applied to the bolt. Hopefully, I have resolved the issue. Kinda crazy. Thanks RonChris
