Microwave, No Microwave, Microwave

Well, we decided to go back to a microwave since we have plenty of solar now. Found a good fit on Amazon for a couple hundred bucks. (microwave)

Since I was in there, I relocated my inverter switch from a terrible location to a better place next to the microwave. Also pulled a couple of wires from the batteries to the gauge panel for a future project. Who knows!

Jor, I like your idea of locating the inverter switch next to the microwave; mine is in the same crappy location.

Yeah, when I bought my TK, expected the microwave to be a bread box until I removed it.

But once I did my major solar upgrade including the always on inverter, the microwave is a great tool once you don’t have to crank up the generator to use the microwave.

Dave, I haven’t tried leaving the inverter on all the time as we only use it occasionally but perhaps I’ll try an experiment to see how much it draws down the batteries. 🤔

I don't have a picture yet, but my inverter control panel is directly next to the microwave on the right, and the switch to connect the microwave to the inverter is next to it.  Both are just above the 'old' standard Lazy Daze display panel.
As an old Navy Radar repairman, I energize the microwave and let the filament warm up, for a few minutes at least, before subjecting it to full power demands of cooking.  The designers of the microwave I'm sure didn't anticipate full power operation immediately after application of power.  Those old vacuum tubes are pretty tough, but still a tube and an old style filament.   RonB

If my battery bank was good enough to run a microwave I still wouldn't want one.
I prefer a toaster/convection oven because it's more useful.

We removed our Microwave over five years ago when we did the Kitchen remodel.  We do not use it, we have one at home and don't use it either, it has been relegated to our "Mother in law" apartment downstairs.  We still don't use it!  We like the extra space it's removal created.  We do have a small toaster oven that travels in our LD for times when we need that kind of thing.  We do have enough solar and enough inverter and now new Lithium so we could support a microwave but we choose the toaster oven!

Looks like my Xantrex inverter draws about 1.6 amps at idle, according to the Victron. Regarding relocating the inverter switch next to the microwave, there is a factory nightlight switch there now but since it isn’t really used, It could be eliminated.

Edit: On second glance, there isn’t enough room to put it there, but it could possibly be located above the microwave. I’ll have to think about whether it’s worth the trouble.

If Lazy Daze had sold a door that would have covered the microwave hole and looked Factory, our microwave would have been history 20 years ago. We were not able to use it while dry camping until three years ago with the addition of the big inverter and lithium batteries.

We built the Microwave door ourselves.  I pulled two doors from the bathroom that matched the pattern of the doors in the kitchen and took them apart and rebuilt them to the two new sizes we needed in the kitchen.  I built two new doors for the bathroom with a different pattern that I could do here easily.  All the doors were going to be painted so I did not have to match the wood color with the old color in the kitchen.   In the future if someone wanted a microwave in that spot it could be smaller an put it in that cabinet, the power plug is still there.  We did have a Air Fryer in there for a while but did not use much, we use our toaster oven more.

Seems a bit much, my Victron Energy MultiPlus 12/3000/120-50 120V draws about 20 watts at idle

1.6 amps at 12 volts is 19.2 watts, so it sounds as if you two are pretty close.
