Mid Bath-Rear Passenger Side Sofa Bed

I have a 1998 mid-bath with the two sofas in the rear.  After having both hips replaced I switched from sleeping over the cab.  I now sleep on the passenger side (which is a little longer) pulling out the sofa until both cushions lie flat.
I had a 2-inch memory foam topper (two inches that came with the rig) that a friend cut to size and put some wide pieces of waffle shelf liner in between the sofa and the topper so it doesn't "shift."  I took some king sized pillow shams to put against the window to make it look more like a day bed.  However, I'm "done" with that and want to make use of the total space for a more comfortable bed.
I suppose when I was younger it didn't matter as much, but I'm not getting great sleep and having some shoulder pain.  I'll probably use the back rest of the sofa not in the "tilted" arrangement to make more space for the bed.
I don't know if I should store the sofa pieces over the cab and just get a mattress or put a more substantial "topper" over the sofa pieces.
The problem is according to my measurements the length is 75 inches and the width is 45 inches.  The 75 inch part is somewhat standard, but I'd probably have to cut with an electric knife down to fit the 45 inch width.  (Could someone confirm that I measured correctly?)    My nine year old Luna sleeps basically where she likes,  and I should try to not be a side sleeper.   I need a more comfortable (and spacious) area to sleep.
Therefore, I'm considering purchasing this 3 inch memory foam topper (with cover) from Amazon and cutting off the excess with an electric knife as before.  Any suggestions on what you've done and/or brand, size, etc...  Thanks in advance!

I put a traditional twin mattress in the passenger side couch space in my 2003 MB.    I like it and have no plans to go back.

I picked an inexpensive foam mattress in a rolled up box from a warehouse club.

HUGE improvement over the factory cushions for sleeping.

I don't use the flip out out back to make chair space, but I could.  It does impede into the aisle a bit as the couch isn't completely stored against the wall while the mattress is in place.

We use to play around with pulling out the passenger side couch to RV full size bed which is 75"x 56" and add a piece of cut foam as filler to get there.  Then we put a ikea 3" quilted cover topper which was rolled up in the daytime and put up in the overcab.  After a while we got tired of having to make up the bed each night so we just left it setup.  Well that topper over time just did not cut it after a while so it was pulled and we bought a RV Queen latex mattress from Costco online which is 75"x 60", these sized beds are also referred to as  a "Hotel Queen".  We switched the back cushion with the bottom cushion on the drivers side couch since the back cushion is less deep.  With the RV Queen 60" wide and the bottom cushion on the Driver side couch we have about 4" to 6" in between them.  This mattress we got from Costco is very comfortable and just right for us.  We do lose our rear lounge to a full time bedroom now.  We have thought of having some specialized foam cut into a kind of folding mattress with a finished cover that would allow us to fold it up as a couch and give us our rear lounge back.  We would have to be as comfortable as our bed in there now but finding a shop that does this might be difficult.

Cheryl, they make a "RV Three Quarter" size mattress which is 75"x 48".  Maybe that would fit for you and it would be more comfortable?

Even simpler, for travelers to Mexico is to buy a mattress down there, the matrimonio size is 75 x 49 and fits perfectly as a permanent bed in passenger side of the MB rear lounge area.  I've used one for years and really love it.  It takes a little gymnastics to change sheets, which are also available in Mexico... but it works great for sleeping.

That would be great, BUT I've developed right shoulder pain (which my primary care doctor made me have an x-ray for and then dismissed me with "arthritis".)  I need more room than the twin mattress can provide for two reasons.
1.  My rescue Luna sometimes sleeps at the bottom of the bed which is fine, but many times sleeps near my head so I have no room to "turn."  I've had her for eight years now and I'm pretty sure our "sleeping arrangement" isn't going to change.
2.  I've found that sleeping on my back is the best for pain, and I usually put a pillow on either side so I can't "roll" over onto my shoulder, so I need more room for "pillow placement."

Oddly, I just left Puerto Penasco last Monday after being there since the third week in February.  However, currently I have the sofa pulled out flat and my measurements were 75 X 45 so that would entail a three inch "overhang" in the width if I've measured correctly."  That's not a big deal as long as the mattress didn't "shift."  I suppose you've taken out the sofa cushions and stored them somewhere.  I've actually measured it several times and come up with the same results.  As a side note they actually sell sheets to fit on Amazon.com.

I feel for one person I'd have enough space if I used a 3/4 mattress since in my original post I like the little "aisle."  Thanks for your suggestions as I need to do something to remedy the shoulder pain after sleeping.

Cheryl our Queen latex mattress from Costco is 10" deep and very comfortable, we shopped around for a while but lucked out with the Costco one.  If you are shopping for a real mattress and not a RV mattress, I am sure you could find the right one that would work well.  Our Queen mattress overhangs about 4", because of it's size it does not move around.  I don't think a "RV 3/4 Mattress" would move around much with 4" overhang.  Maybe if you stapled a strip of low-pile carpet or something to the plywood edge of your couch that may stabilize the mattress?

More recently in the last few years we find ourselves staying inside our LD more then outside either due to weather or possibly the places we have to stay like RV parks.  So in these situations it would be nice to have our rear lounge back from time to time.  Our biggest challenge to that is a couch that folds into a bed that is as comfortable as our bed we have now.  Our best solution is a folding mattress that is as comfortable as bed as well as a couch.  This would go on the passenger side 75" long and we would want it to fold out 60" like what we have now.  We have talked with mattress maker$ and they have suggested a multi layered mattress that has cuts or creases which allow it to fold but when flat not have any "cracks" in it.  There may be places in Mainland Mexico but that is a bit far for us right now.  We do have the driver-side couch to sit on but we miss those days when we could entertain a few people back in our rear lounge.

Greetings to Everyone,

We are new Lazy Daze owners, just purchasing a one-owner 2006 Mid Bath this Spring.   After years of boating (doing the Loop, etc), we have moved over to RVing.  Thanks to all who maintain and post here.  What a great treasure of information.

The purpose of this post is to show other options if one desires to modify the back bedroom.  This modification is similar to the option of two-barrel chairs from the factory.  Of course, this is an individual consideration and could affect resale.

We removed the driver-side couch and replaced it with two RV recliners.  We also used posts here to modify the passenger couch to hold an RV queen mattress topper...72 X 60.  My wife and I can sleep on the queen with no issues and find it easier to get up in the night with the room left between the mattress and the recliners (not much!).   This change provides us with a very comfortable living space in the rear and easily transforms into a queen sleeper area.   We use a 6-inch wide piece of firm foam to support the mattress topper as it hangs over the pulled-out couch.

What we lost was an option for a king bed (but hard to get out of in the night) and the storage under the removed couch.  We did keep the couch in case the next owner would like to restore the original setup.  Of course, the frame came apart in pieces but can easily be rebuilt and attached.

We had the carpet professionally replaced by a boat upholstery shop here on Kent Island, MD....great attention to detail.  We will use the existing seat belt straps to hold the recliners during travel.

We have other mods planned once we use the RV a bit more, but we are very happy with the condition and quality of a 20-year-old RV!

Welcome and congratulations on your "new" rig; the modification was nicely done!  Personally, the biggest drawback for me would be losing that storage compartment under the sofa as that's where I keep fresh water and electrical gear but hey, that's just me.  ;)  So what do you see when you open up the exterior door now?

Thanks for the well wishes!

The door is caulked shut and should not open unless you choose to undo the seal.  I didn't use a 5200-type product to allow for a change in the future if desired.  Never say never is what I learned with boats lol.

And yes, losing the storage space was a major discussion, but we opted for a life comfort improvement over the extra storage. We like having the two recliners for comfort, and it gives the back lounge a nice feel.  One still has the other couch to allow for a nap or guests.

Off topic....Since we are new to RV life, we rely on experts, such as those on this board, and take it slow.  Our first long trip will be a few months in  Florida in Jan and Feb to avoid the cold wind here.  I retire on March 1st, and then the REAL adventures begin.  My wife and I work remotely, so she might continue working while I plan the next day's trip.
