AGAIN- Headlights (😂)
The last time we refinished our headlights, I said it would be the LAST TIME.  Well Neighbors, not true.  While driving in a rain storm, some kind of nasty material splashed on the headlights and caused a difficult to remove stain.  And so, I have a new LAST TIME!

I might mention that Margee and I are getting good at restoring headlights.   Btw, Margee did the passenger side light.  At any rate, this might be one of my few RV skills.

And a link for those who wish to buy from Amazon. Amazon.com: CERAKOTE® Ceramic Headlight Restoration Kit – Guaranteed To Last...
It seems to be available in many locations.  I've never used it (yet), but I may try it soon.  RonB

Ron, the kit comes with 3 sets of prepackage materials. The first set (step 1) is a wet cloth that is something like a gentle solvent.  The second set contains 3 more wet clothes that are used to remove the oxidation. The next step uses supplied 2000 grit sandpaper on a handheld applicator followed by supplied 3000 grit sandpaper. The last step is to apply a supplied coat of something like heavy duty clear coat.  The kit includes clear instructions regarding each step. Each headlight gets the same amount of materials described above.

The lens look cloudy after the 3000 grit step.  The clear coat leaves a clear bright finish.  I might add that we used 2” masking tape to protect the paint and chrome finishes.

Hope this helps.

Ed, is it one kit per headlight?

The headlight kits usually contain material for two headlights.

Over the years, I have tried polishing yellowed headlights with limited success. Modern plastic headlights have precision surfaces to aim and focus the light.  When refinishing headlights, the sanding causes slight distortions in the headlight's surface, causing the low beam's sharp cutoff, which newer headlights have to lose their sharp edges and overall brightness. The polished headlights are never as good as the original headlights, and since the factory ultraviolet protective coating has been sanded off, they will need refinishing again in a couple of years if stored outside. Headlights continue to become even less effective with each additional polishing.
If you don't drive at night, this isn't a big problem, but if you do, you will be driving with less effective lights.

For badly damaged headlights, replacement is the best cure. Keeping the headlights covered or inside out of the sun when in storage will keep the lenses clear for years longer. Our 2003 LD is on its third set of replacement headlights. Luckily, the pre-2008 E450s headlights are one-third the price of the newer ones.

Larry, I’ve debated buying new vs treatment. Did you buy your replacements at the dealership or go third party?

The new headlights came from Rock Auto, and they cost about $30 each, plus shipping. Make sure to get the right and left side, they are different. Amazon also sells them.

Any recommendations on a good method to cover the headlights?

Well, the front body is steel (except, I believe, for the hood). OK, cut two pieces of opaque fabric that will more than cover the headlights, hem them, and sew a few small magnets into the hems.

I looked into a front end bra to protect the headlight lenses but was unable to find one for the E450.

The afternoon sun is pretty brutal at our house so I came up with this idea for storing the LD. It adds some protection during the hottest part of the day.
