Wiring Diagram for 4 Pin Plug & 6 Pin, 7 Pin Info
I'm not sure how to search for this in the forum.  Is there a diagram that shows how the 6-way plug in the spare tire cover on a 2006 30IB is wired?  I've purchased a used MH, but haven't picked it up yet.  I'd like to get a head start on having the local hitch shop make an umbilical for our tow vehicle (2012 Honda CRV).

Is there anything on the forum that might help?

I think it's a 4 pin plus unless it's been changed over the years. There is a diagram in the manual. Looking at the plug face on with the notch at the top and going clockwise, at 2:00 is the right turn signal (green). At 4:00 are the running lights (brown). At 8:00 is the ground (white). At  10:00 is the left turn signal (yellow).

I expect OEM in 2006 was a four pin connector.  If the poster does actually have a six pin connector, it likely has been an aftermarket change.  When we had our 2002 MB, I replaced the four pin connector with a six pin connector to add a brake activation control line and a 12V charge line.  Six pin tow connectors are pretty standardized, but I would want to verify what the pinouts are before proceeding.

I will need a 6 pin connection to power my SMI Stay & Play Duo.  Once I have the unit in hand, I'll take MH to a local hitch company that has helped before.

We had a Stay & Play on our Forester and will be getting one on the 2014 Honda CRV soon. I thought our old one was powered on a 4 pin has that changed? Are you talking about the 4 pin cable that connects to the LD or has that changed on whatever model LD you have?

Maybe I'm getting the cable connections confused. The one I'm thinking of is just powering the brake lights on the car I think.

Before you put too much work into wiring a 6-pin connector in, I'm going to recommend a 7-pin 'RV' connector. Sadly there doesn't seem to be a standard that every manufacturer follows. They all have their own idea about how best to do it, or build it. I've found the Hopkins 'RV' connector to be pretty common. I've seen them at WalMart, and at various automotive stores.
   It does have space for 7 wires. I wired up my motorhome for the 7 pin, including a return wire from the towed vehicle that powers an LED on the dash to let me know when the towed's brakes are applied.  7 pins allows for a charging wire to keep the towed cars battery charged, especially if you are running something like a Brake Buddy. I send a 'decoded' Ford left/brake and right/brake signal, a so called 2-wire system, and provide the auxiliary a  'Brake' signal that can be used by the aux brake. That is the 'everybody but the US' 3-wire system. That is where the brakes and tail lights are separated from the turn signals.

When I ordered the 31 IB, I asked for a standard 7 pin connector on the MH.  The response was 'fine, you provide it", which I did.  The CRV has the SMI Stay & Play which came with a 6 pin connector.  I picked up a standard 7-pin - 6-pin cable at CrampingWorld which works fine. At some point I want to run another line to charge the battery.

There may be a standard 6pin cable that will work.

Here are a few pieces of info/advice.

1) A six-pin connector also has a pin for a 12V charge line. See the charts and diagrams here.

2) The four-pin connector LD provides (on some models) has enough signals to activate the Demco (formerly SMI) Stay-in-Play Duo. Without a charge line, though, the Duo vacuum pump unit may deplete the toad battery.

3) Ford provides a fused 12V charge line in the E-450 chassis build. It terminates, along with the other trailer signals, on two connectors located inside the left frame rail, between four and eight feet forward of the rear bumper. If you can get to them, you can splice an extension to reach a six- or seven-pin hitch connector. Otherwise, it's run a new line from the front of the coach, under the coach. If you do that, don't forget to add a correctly-sized fuse within a foot or so of the LD chassis battery. Same for the toad end.

4) I found that, though expensive, the RV ProPlug (link here) fits very well on the LD bumper. It has built-in test LEDs, which I used for troubleshooting. If you go for a seven-pin connector on the LD, you may want to consider it.

I am missing something here and I am glad I am. I have used a 4-pin to a Stay-In-Play on two Jeeps. No need for a charging line. The RV powers the Stay-In-Play and the Jeep uses its battery for brake lights. I have towed for days at a time, never un-hooking and the Jeep battery is always fully charged.
