A day in the life of a newbie and a question
So I'm home alone today with no adult supervision and decided to familiarize myself with my new LD tire changing procedure. On my 1500 mile journey home with "Larry" I lost a a passenger side front wheel simulator on a wash board road into a campground in Oregon ( I think). No big deal I bought another one and snapped it into place.
So today I thought I'd remove the driver's side simulator because being old it was bound to be looser and then see what socket I needed for the lug nuts. I pryrd and pryed and pryrd with no results except slightly bending the simulator.
Google to the rescue sort of. All I could find for removal instructions was the two bolt kind which I didn't have or so I thought. After further inspection I saw the dimpled lugs. Apparently the driver's side did have that style and off they came no sweat.
Now for my question. When putting the chrome bolt covers back in place one popped on nicely the other just falls on and will surly fall off. Any tricks to get this thing to stay put? Chewing gum? Crazy glue? Magic? I'm open for suggestions.
Discuss anything with anyone and disagree agreeably. Always be polite and respectful.

For some reason I can only see half the page and don't see anything addressing my problem of the sloppy chrome cap that covers the securing nut.. What am I missing?

You might want to check this thread for specifics on the KII (Kaper II) lug nut extenders and "acorn" caps; I think that the wheel covers on a '97 may be the same or similar as on my '03, but, if not, a call to the company (website is given in the posts) would tell you.

(Note: not that it has to do with wheel covers specifically, but links to the Tireman's website in one of the posts are no longer valid, as far as I know.)

Acorn caps are what they are called huh. Good name for them. I wiggled them off with a crescent wrench and both were on pretty tight but now this one is sloppy so apparently I opened it up when removing. I may put it in a vice and give it a little squeeze job. That might be all I need to do here.

Good part is I now know my lug nuts are 22 mm. Google searches gave me several different sizes.

There should be 10 photos and they are there simply to show all the parts and pieces of the wheel covers/lug nuts/acorn caps and how they fit together.

The link I posted in "Reply #3" doesn't connect to anything except a page asking again for a search phrase; I have no idea why, as the link was a direct c&p from the browser bar. I suggest plugging "lug nut extender" and/or "wheel cover" into the forum's search bar and digging through the posts. Or, just go to Chris' link and to the KII website to figure out what's needed. KII's customer service is very helpful, so one gets stuck, a call to them can help.

I ended up wrapping a thin strip of duct tape around the extender bolt and tapping the acorn cap on with a small rubber mallet. Fit so nice and snug I pulled the other one off and did the same thing. Duct tape to the rescue once again. :D

The "extender bolts" engage the first few exposed threads of the wheel stud. Some front hubs have only one or two full threads of usable thread.
With so little thread engagement, the extender's internal threads can be come worn and will not adequately tighten down.
The cure is to either replace the extender or by removing the first two or three threads of the extender by grinding. This exposes a 'new' set of the internal threads.  The extenders are usually more than long enough, shortening them a little doesn't matter.    A bench disc grinder works fine for this task.

The cover's chrome caps can loosen and will fall off the nuts. Glue the caps on the nuts with polyurethane or other exterior adhesive, after cleaning .

And always remove the covers yourself before any type of wheel, tire or brake work, few understand how they work, many times resulting in one or more of the fake lug nuts being ripped out by a ham fisted mechanic.
