Any insurance recommendations other than Progressive?
I have been with Progressive for 9 years.  In that time, I have had no accidents, no claims, and no tickets.  I just got my notice for renewal, and they have raised my premium by 30%, so I want to look around and see what else is out there.  Any suggestions?

If you have military affiliations you might want to investigate USAA.

USAA does not write RV insurance. They have a relationship with Progressive

I have progressive, through USAA, , as well, and our premium took a big jump because the risk characteristics of CO changed. Or so they say.
My premium went up by 25%.
I checked with Good Sam. They were lower by $0.035/day. I decided to stay with a company I have been satisfied with for a number of years.

We also have Progressive (via USAA) which will expire towards the end of 2017.  So I'm going to be very interested in your final determination because I know you seldom do anything without a 100% review of all the "if's, and's, and but's".    In other words, I really like to benefit from your insurance review.

And if that is in fact the case, I won't go there! I have an issue with Progressive of a political nature so I guess this ends my part of the conversation, only to abide with Forum Rules.  >:(

I also have issues with my insurer, State Farm, but that is a different situation.  ::)

Recommending an insurance company for an area you do not live in is pretty much worthless. Rates for the same company vary by state and locale. Shop companies that sell in your area. We got coverage from Ameriprise through Costco a few years back. We have been pleased so far. That does NOT mean they have the best value where you live.

Ken, we were with Progressive until we experienced the same rate hike a few years ago. We ended up with National General Ins. Actually, it was GMAC but they were bought by NatGen. We had one theft claim and it was handled very efficiently. We do have full timer coverage with them. Each year I compare rates with other companies and while I sometimes see rates a bit lower it usually is at the expense of some coverage that I want.

We deal directly with them via their web portal, not through an agent.

Thanks, Ed. The reason I asked is that our current company (Farmer's) keeps jacking up the prices every year even though no claims. Granted, we do live in a wildland fire area but even so . . .

I received a quote today from USAA and it was nearly half the price of Farmer's for a comparable policy. I found that hard to believe so I checked out USAA on Consumer Reports online, thinking they must not be very good for that price.  Turns out USAA is the second highest rated company for homeowners insurance!    I then talked to my step-son who is insured with them and he said nothing but good things as well.  So with your additional good comments, guess where I'm headed?  :)

I agree with the assumption that insurance of any type  is a 'local' issue.   State laws and the insurance company's experience in the area determine what or what not is covered and the price.   In Portland Oregon ----  My brother-in-law  owns a auto-body repair shop.  I asked him about this very question.   He says all the majors are relatively easy to work with.   Under Oregon law we have a fault system.   Also under the law we can go to any repair shop.   Also a insurance company can not delay or block a claim within a 'reasonable' time frame. 

I have separate Progressive policies for my auto and RV.   Today I'm using AAA RV but I'm thinking of moving to another provider because I can't be sure of their service across the country.

I added road service to my Progressive RV policy for something like $2-3 / month.
You can log in to your Progressive site and get a quick number on just what it would cost to add the coverage.

I was surprised that State Farm gave me a very good deal.   I carry all my insurance through them, live in Idaho, and have a clean record - it all helps.

One potential issue you want to address when changing your insurance companies is the amount of coverage they will provide in the case of a total loss.
As has been frequently discussed around here over the years, is the 'book value' number an insurance company uses may be quite a bit lower than your actual replacement cost. 
There was a conversation some time ago about a women whose LD was destroyed in a fire. She came face-to-face with this issue.

Not that Progressive is any better. On a new unit purchase, they will provide total loss coverage for the first five years of ownership based on your documented purchase price. After that they use a 'negotiated value'. On my '08, after the fifth year was up, they contacted me to say my total loss coverage was gone and now they would provide $xxx of coverage as the 'negotiated value' . I said my LD would cost more than that to replace, let's go with x+20%. They would not. I said to the women on the phone, "So 'negotiated value' really means the value you decide they you  will cover?". She smiled over the phone and said, "Well, I guess that's what it means." 😩

Such is life in the big city.

Generally State Farm does a good job. I've been with them most of my adult life and they have made me a satisfied customer.

However, they can be a sneaky bunch... If you have Personal Liability with them (as I do) and also RV Insurance, watch what happens to the premium on the PL if you should decide to move your RV coverage somewhere else. My agent confirmed that it would at least double, and even he was surprised at that.   :o  >:(

I don't know if they still offer this but National General Ins offers the replacement cost for the first 5 years and if you continue it afterwards it reverts to coverage for what you paid for the RV.

An update - I had emailed my agent with my concern.  His response was that they had been using my declared value of $80K for the policy, and if the value was now less, the premium would drop by an amount based on the agreed value.  I told him to use $48K and send a quote.  I am waiting to hear from him after the weekend.

While that addresses the concern about the rig value dropping while premiums are climbing, it does not address why, with a fixed valuation of $80K, my premium jumped from approximately $1000 in 2016 to approximately $1300 in 2017.

Anyway, I am waiting to hear from him, and am still pondering making a change.  This I know - no matter where I go, the insurance companies have me by the short hairs...

One of the primary drivers of insurance cost is the claim history and cost to insurers in your specific insurance market.  Not your personal claim history, but the total market history.  If there have been more claims than in the past, if the average cost of a claim has gone up, etc. then the insurance companies ask the state insurance board for a rate hike to address the increased risk.

Come on down to the land of the drive thru daiquiri stands with lawyer's billboards lining our highways and cluttering up our airwaves if you want high insurance rates.
I just bought an '07 Jeep Liberty for a toad.  Paid $3500 for it.  Called my agent to insure it.  Yep, it'll cost more than my '11 4x4 Tahoe or '14 Mustang convertible!  His excuse for such a high price was because it was a new style for us and we didn't have experience driving that kind of car!  But in a year or 2 it might go down.  Yeah right!  insurance rates go down?  that'll happen....
BTW my dad was a very successful independent insurance agent so I kinda know how the system works.

What is the land you are talking about? I don't get the reference. Everywhere we travel I see ridiculous plaintiff attorney advertising on TV and billboards.

My own experience in working with agents is that it wasn't uncommon for them to provide incorrect information when it came to underwriting or claims. My guess would be that the company was having higher claims experience with that model vehicle. Look at the breakdown of coverages and compare them and you will see what is costing more.
