House batteries/solar 6v September 01, 2025, 10:03:08 am I need to replace one 6 volt house batter for my solar. My current batteries are O'Riley's Super Start Fleet & heavy duty. One battery is showing a full charge but it has a bulging case and it leaks. Should I replace the bad battery with the same brand or possibly purchase a slightly less expensive SLIGC110 Duracell Ultra | 215AH | 6V | Golf Cart & Floor Scrubber Battery | Deep Cycle | Group Size GC2159 dollars 99 cents$159.99I realize lithium is the way to go. Due to a tight budget I need to stay with the less expensive acid batteries.Your thoughts.
Re: House batteries/solar 6v Reply #1 – September 01, 2025, 10:13:01 am Absolutely replace both batteries... The bad one will have stressed the 'good' one, which is presumed the same age anyway.... Note that a single 12 v, 100Ah LFP battery will outperform a pair of your 6V batteries, if price is the consideration. It will charge up faster and maintain its performance level at least down to a 20% state of charge. Then, if you want to add another similar one in a year or so, no problem.Steve 3 Likes
Re: House batteries/solar 6v Reply #2 – September 01, 2025, 10:38:20 am Hi Chris; This WalMart battery should work, and has free delivery. About the same price as the lead acid you posted, this 12v battery will do the same job, by itself. When you can, you can add another battery in parallel. As Steve suggested. That would give you the same Watt-hour capacity as two 6v lead acid batteries in series. (what you currently have (pun intended). 12V 100Ah LiFePO4 Lithium Battery,100A BMS,TCBWORTH BCI Group 31 Battery for... The price at $155 is advertised as a "flash Sale" may not last. As Steve mentioned in a previous post, WalMart is trying to compete with Amazon for automotive parts. It states that it isn't for starting a car, but it should be able to start your generator. Two wired in parallel should have no problem starting the generator.RonB edit: user experience seems to be less than stellar. The normal price is $299.99, so this 'sale' price is about half.
Re: House batteries/solar 6v Reply #3 – September 01, 2025, 10:40:43 am Hi Ron. How would you install a 12 volt? Is it small enough to fit in the battery tray?
Re: House batteries/solar 6v Reply #4 – September 01, 2025, 11:12:50 am Hi Chris; The main red wire going to your pair of series wired batteries would go to the one lithium battery positive terminal. The main negative black wire that goes to ground, (there may be more than one wire going to the other 6v battery negative terminal) will connect to the negative connection on the Lithium battery. The wire connecting the two six volt batteries together, including the manual shut off switch, (if so equipped by LD) will be not needed. I would 'ditch' that shut off switch anyway. They were a high failure rate item, and a lot of trouble. The size 31 battery should fit easily by itself in the battery box. I'd have to measure your battery box to see if it would fit two of them in the same box. RonB 1 Likes
Re: House batteries/solar 6v Reply #5 – September 01, 2025, 11:50:01 am I have no idea how good the Walmart lithium batteries are, but they sure are cheap. Below is a link for a 100-amp lithium battery for $129 or $250 for a pair, prices unheard of until now. A pair of Series 24 batteries will definitely fit in the battery box. These batteries will lack any of the upgrades available in more expensive batteries, such as Bluetooth and heaters. Who knows how good the BMS is? Robot or human? Lithium battery link.BTW, O'Riley's Super Start Fleet & heavy-duty batteries are starting batteries only, not deep cycle. Not having the correct battery type may be why the battery is failing. Interestingly, the O'Riley battery is more expensive than the Walmart lithium. Re: House batteries/solar 6v Reply #6 – September 01, 2025, 12:40:39 pm As Larry said, if a battery has "start" in its name, it's not suitable for use as an RV house battery. It doesn't matter how "heavy duty" it is, it's designed for a completely different job. As Steve said, you need to replace both batteries, either with deep cycle lead-acid batteries (expensive) or with one or more lithium batteries (better performers in every way when used as house batteries). All lithium batteries can be safely discharged down to 10%-20% of their capacity, whereas even "deep cycle" lead-acid batteries should only be discharged to about 50% if you want them to last. Lithium batteries are lighter, charge faster, and deliver more power per pound. And at today's prices, they're less expensive than lead-acid.
Re: House batteries/solar 6v Reply #7 – September 01, 2025, 02:05:37 pm Thanks Larry.So this one 12v lithium can replace two 6v deep cycles?Thanks!
Re: House batteries/solar 6v Reply #8 – September 01, 2025, 02:51:18 pm Hi Chris; Yes one 12v battery will replace two 6v batteries, but at half the watt hour capacity. Given that routine discharge of a lead acid past 50% of capacity will quickly ruin it, the LiF battery can routinely handle discharge to about 90% with no damage. So the watt hour capacity is better for Lithium. The batteries Larry listed are maybe a better deal. The size 24 at 10.25" long will fit in your present pull out tray, and two would also fit with no alterations. (other than the switch from series to parallel wiring) The size 31 at 3" longer, and to fit two in your present battery box, they would have to lay sideways, one on top of the other. The GreenOE battery Larry found is also a 'flash sale', It doesn't list the 'normal' price. The two for $250 is a great price! Free shipping is even better. It is good that they are Iron Phosphate chemistry. RonB
Re: House batteries/solar 6v Reply #9 – September 01, 2025, 03:05:40 pm Quote from: NADAZE! - September 01, 2025, 02:05:37 pmSo this one 12V lithium can replace two 6v deep cycles?Well, not exactly.A new, 220-amp/hour battery has a maximum of 110 amp/hours of usable power (50% of capacity), without damaging the battery. This capacity decreases every year about 10%.A 100-amp/hour lithium has 80-amp/hours of usable power, 80% of capacity. Occasional usage to 90-amp/hours is OK. The capacity should not drop significantly over the next few years.Lead-acid batteries are obsolete for RV usage.Whatever way you go, get rid of both 6-volt batteries; they were not the right battery in the first place, and the old one would damage the new battery if only the bad battery is replaced.I would buy one 12-volt 100-amp/hour lithium and add a second when your finances improve.Larry 1 Likes
