Dryers, welding machines and electric stoves all use 240-volt power, instead of the 120-volts that our LDs use.
The 240-volt receptacles look very much like the 30-amp, 120-volt receptacles our LDs use.

A 240-volt circuit can be split into two 120-volt circuits but require the knowledge of an electrician to do safely.
Screw up and sent 240-volt power to your LD and much of the electrical system will burn up and possibly burn your LD too.

For many, a 30-amp outlet is not necessary. With a 30-20-amp adaptor, an LD can be powered by a normal, 20-amp, 120-volt home circuit, as long as the load is limited.

We do this when driveway camping at friends and relatives. To prevent popping a circuit breaker when using the A/C or an electric heater, the refrigerator is run on propane and the rest of the rig on battery power only, with the converter shut off.
The converter and refrigerator can be turned back on whenever the A/C or an electric heater are not in use.
