Anyone know the tool that goes in this box?

I am posting this here as I know there are people on this forum that have a lot of tool knowledge.

We are reporting a theft that we had at our storage (pros and cons to this as it did spur us to do our downsizing pass #2, a huge letting go of items, but unfortunately they of course got things we wanted to keep).

Most of my power tools were taken and it wasn't unusual for the box to be left behind, like this one. However, the thief also left some of our items in another person's storage so it is was possible this came from someone else and wasn't ours.

This was a box left, nothing inside except the hex key and small wrench - which implies something was being attached to some tool.

The indentations on each side are about 3/4" deep. The U shaped item placed in the box is about 10" at the widest point of the U and about 7" from the top to the bottom of the U.

I have no idea what was in this toolbox - see attached pictures.
It is possible it is a car or woodworking tool though most tools were construction tools and ran the full gamut of things used for drilling. sawing, sanding, plumbing specialty tools, electrical specialty tools, etc.

I have no idea if it is a tool or a part(s) to attach to a tool. A home depot person (admittedly weekend, not the stronger week day ones) had no idea.

Anyone have any idea?
Any input or even guesses are welcome.

Sorry to hear about the theft.

This case is obviously for an adjustable boomerang.

Greg, LOL. With attachable components I am sure so that you can fly it other places than just back to yourself.
I have scratched my head over this for months and just can't figure it out. And I thought I knew my tools - but like I said it could have come from someone else's storage.

Hello,
My DH was cleaning up his garage and just ran across his set.
They are from a Gorilla ladder and were used to make the ladder into two step ladders instead of one large adjustable ladder.

Thanks lots. I never would have guessed that.

We did have one of those great nice sturdy ladders that can be put into many positions and works on uneven ground. A different brand though. And yup that got taken also (no logic to what was taken, apparently the guy had a long history of meth use).

We had never separated our ladder into two pieces but I have thought several times that would be nice to do. I had totally forgotten we had the parts to do that.

I call 'em flat box wenches. In my bike days we use them alot to adjust/change gears and what not of the rear and front wheels.

I had a storage space 10+ years ago that was broken into. Thieves opened a line of 5-6 lockers and scattered stuff everywhere looking for valuables.

The facility managers just stuffed the items back into whichever locker was closest and used some wood to close the units back up. When questioned, I was told that it was standard practice in the industry and they wouldn't/couldn't even check if some of my missing stuff was actually re-assigned to a locker nearby.

In any case, I know people consider storing their RV at a storage facility or store valuables if they travel for extended periods of time. It pays to choose a facility wisely, and even that might not be enough to protect your stuff.

Rich, I agree. The place we were at had cameras at the building entrances, but not in the hallway with the doors to the storage units. They were pretty sure they knew who had broken in (based on who went in and out of the building) but without the camera footage of the actual break in, the police could not search his storage unit (where he had put many of the stolen items until he could come back with a truck) nor his house. I would pick a place with cameras everywhere next time.
Also the storage place didn't notify us for 4 days after it happened. I think they were going thru tapes to try and figure out who did what (so they didn't notify the thieves) and when asked why it took so long they said they had other things to do (huh, I would think this would be a top priority item). Our unit and it's items were easily accessible to anyone during that time.

Talking to another place, storage units get broken into regularly. But typically it is a one time thing, then it doesn't happen again for another several years. We have never had this happen to us nor seen evidence it happened and we have rented storage on and off over decades.

The units broken into were not close together but some of our items ended up in a unit about 100' away, everything was very illogical (what he took, the fact he went thru things throwing items to one side while he sorted thru the unit, what he left behind in other places, etc.). But as I said he was a long time meth users (had been arrested for it many times).

We are all supposed to have a record of all our belongings including pictures and serial numbers (or mark them permanently with your name). This makes reporting to insurance agencies easier but it also helps the police to find the person (they distribute to pawn shops the serial numbers and special markings, which at least gives them an address for the person as that is required to be given to the pawn shop).

That said, I never did that as cataloguing of all the items in a stick and brick house, including what comes in and leaves over time, as it just seems such a huge job. Even after having experienced this theft, I am not sure it would have been worth the time (e.g. the time spent over the years cataloguing items less the extra time I spent figuring items out that were taken divided by the extra money received for having everything well documented). It is probably worth it to document your more expensive items and taking some general pictures to help remind you of what to claim especially if there is a total loss (e.g. fire) but I don't think I can recommend a detailed description of everything (unless you don't have that much as you are full timing in your RV / tiny house).

However, I would suggest documenting all major improvements in your RV in case there is a loss of your RV.

Glen, I had guessed at that also - something to contain a set of tools, but I had not bought a set in a box that looked like that. So it didn't seem to match.

I had a storage locker broken into a couple of months ago. Some of my tools (my compound mitre saw), my bike, zero gravity camping chair and other misc. stuff were taken. My locker was near a camera, which "just happened" to be pointed in a direction that did not cover my locker.

In my case, most of the items taken were those that I was going to have to donate before going full-time anyway. One thing I did was use my phone to photograph the locker contents as I loaded in and whenever I finished for the day. That was very helpful in figuring what was missing.
