Title: Solid valve stem extensions for the duallys
Post by: tedeboy on December 06, 2025, 01:57:09 pm
Borg makes solid valve extenders I'm interested in for my rear duallys however I've read and heard different reports on whether they interfere with the internal Ford TPMS system or not.

Does anyone have a definitive answer on this?

Hi Ted; The inside the rim Ford TPMS sensor/ transmitter will not work with the Borg style solid extensions. Larry did come up with a way that you could have both.  By drilling another hole in the wheel at 180 degrees, for a separate filler, unrelated to the internal tpms.   Enlarging the wheel cover holes? (https://www.lazydazeowners.com/index.php?topic=37034.msg236111#msg236111)
I've been using the same flexible extender hoses for 25 years now without leaks, or having blowout issues/ wear from external interference with rims or covers. The only loss of hoses has been with Discount Tire technicians who wouldn't listen, or couldn't understand not to take out the schrader valve inserts, or that the tire dismount machine would rip the hose or tire valve to shreds. (they paid for the new stem, new hoses, and the remounting to install them correctly!). (Extra work for me too!, I should have billed them for my time!)
Solid extenders can be attached to your Ford sensor transmitter tire valves to make them easier to get to.:

I have a friend's 2021 MB sitting in my driveway with air hoses that do not fit properly. A new set of longer hoses will be delivered tomorrow.
I hope to make them work.
It's too bad that TPMS sensors have rubber stems and cannot use extended valve stems. I have tried to find a TPMS with metal stems for my Jeep. I was able to brace the Jeep's valve stems so are not damaged when a tire pressure sensor is screwed to the stem, when used with the 10 wheel TPMS monitor in the cab of our LD.

I accepted the cost penalty and switched to TST internal sensors.

Does anyone know what model year the Fords used by LD started installing TPMS?

Hi Larry; I was unaware that the built-in tpms for Ford had plastic valve stems. Your solution of an extra hole for Borg bent up stems sounds even better. Twice the chance for leaks, but done right, should be fine.
I had clamp in short metal stems put in each wheel rim at the start.  The hoses I used were Wheel Master.   https://www.amazon.com/Wheel-Masters-Stainless-Steel-Mount/dp/B0002F666K/ref=sr_1_1?crid=39JV5K0UIWZIU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.DPj-4_M8wXzMtK5Sg8vFEK5Zfh6oGfCYER-kG6U4OrlfQWcIufnENcSnsMudtme_knY8a2KEaTK6hs9QyWrRcisve8SPmlVz88bzCGmKswEnfrLzSJxnM7mM-GkhThpsq39c60aqm3yxW0dM8rKZH7hWQ3AeXRFFr4QwIiTnVw_4WShFZwiZPCeump-pQwtjm5GtXbNf5VPRTuPXxV5NgStx1FeQanq1u3YbjDZTPeI.yRnAb89g5NCntN_9kQrkOAMg8lNgYEnUY6CCq_msXgQ&dib_tag=se&keywords=wheel+master+flex+valve+extenders&qid=1765123845&sprefix=wheel+master%2Caps%2C228&sr=8-1&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.9fe8cbfa-bf43-43d1-a707-3f4e65a4b666
The front wheels stainless wheel simulators had an already cut out hole that matched the TST flow through sensors. I used a 1-1/4" extension. The wheel simulators have to be removed to get the sensor off, but the back is positioned to allow simple battery replacement. (I still have the original batteries, new ones in coach),
The rear, I have hard to find, but perfect fit,  2" rubber grommets that go in the steel Ford holes to protect the flex hoses. Angle braces screwed in to the wheel hub, support the weight of my TST flow through sensors. The anti theft provisions are actually pretty good; require a special wrench (provided by TST) to get them off. Again positioned so that the batteries can be replaced easily without removal. (after '99 the holes changed).
I have had my car's (not Ford) tpms senders replaced, and the stems were apparently aluminum, with an aluminum sleeve screwed over it.  Here is a metal adaptor for Ford:  Dill VS241 TPMS Aluminum Stem Service Kit for Ford Super Duty – All Tire Supply (https://www.alltiresupply.com/products/dill-vs241-tpms-aluminum-stem-service-kit-for-2017-ford-super-duty?variant=41631394496586)
Has anybody replaced the internal senders for a E450 chassis?  What brand are they? (Motocraft?)
edit: found these sensors. They seem to have metal stems, that can support flexible (WheelMaster) hoses  Best-Selling 2010-2019 Ford E-450 Super Duty TPMS Tire Pressure Monitoring...
