Title: LD Alternative
Post by: Sarz272000 on December 04, 2025, 11:03:19 pm
Can’t buy a new LD.  Check out this newly redesigned Winnebago Travato.  $183k - $215k.  Lithium, gas water heater and plenty of storage.

I'm not sure what Chris meant? Winnebago is one of the better brands (not by much).  The other 'W' is wet bath, ick!
It would be really tough with three cats, but I understand most people stop at one cat. There are still very nice used Lazy Daze's out there.  RonB

So far, the only one that even gets close to what LD made is Coach House.
I will not ever own an RV with a cassette toilet.
And most of these B class vans based ones have that.
And they are so overpriced for what you get.

Like many of you, I've tracked RV pricing over the years. It seems the class B models are always the most expensive on a square foot basis. I do like the Coach House brand (I've enjoyed following Mike C's build but have hesitated asking what he paid for it) but as someone pointed out, where are the large windows?  That's something I've always liked about the Lazy Daze, along with the low-slung and retro look. Frequently, people comment on the Lazy Daze styling and are surprised that my rig is so new (2017).  That being said, the Lazy Daze does have some build issues which most of us are aware of (such as the flat roof which tends to capture water, cracking end caps, etc.) so it's not a perfect rig (are there any?). But; I've come to appreciate the overall quality of the Lazy Daze for the price. I've heard too many horror stories of build quality issues in very expensive RV's.  Just my 2 cents . . .

I contacted Coach house because they really appeared to have great models as well as qualityand don’t have some of the issues that Lazy Daze incurred such as the end caps.
The price for the model that is most similar to a Lazy Daze mid bath was around $300k a few months ago. And that didn’t include tax.
The world’s gone crazy.

The post by Greg and Jackhiett are exactly the reasons we're very content with our 2009.  Is there a another RV in our future?  Not a snowball chance in Texas in August!

The redesigned Winnebago Travato is a whole lot better than the one from the past.  It has all the latest conveniences one would want.  It does not have a cassette toilet.  But has small tanks.  It would be good to have for couple of years while touring the USA.  At 21 feet it is quite maneuverable.  It has longer beds and lithium batteries.  It lacks solar for the amount of lithium it has.  Not sure about it being a RAM product as I never owned one.  But should be comfortable going place to place.

I think the price is outrageous.  Probably get is for half that in 2 years.  Probably not have many roof, corner or leak issues.  If inside quality is good probably last awhile.   Comparable to LD Twin King.  But Twin king is the better value all things considered.

I have looked at Coach House for years.  I refuse to pay that price or anything close to it.  One piece design can still leak.  The high price does not get one better appliances than other RVs.  They have some crazy size battery with woefully small solar support due to lack of roof space.  On units with two slides rear axle is most likely overloaded when loaded for travel.  It is very nice looking RV.  It is built to a high standard.  I would prefer the Platinum III on the Ford Transit chassis.  Like all RVs, what one likes it in the eye of the beholder.

We still have our popup.  Wife hates it.  She wants something for 2-4 grandkids to come with us.   So I guess we will get another RV.  Looking at some cheaper bulk house no slide models with Curt shock absorber suspension.  Looked at new Expedition and Suburban for tow vehicles.  Yikes $80,000!!  Can buy a fine LD for that!  Heck a LD 27 MB would work.

Merry Christmas to ALL!

Just a comment about windows: the smaller the RV, the more difficult it is to design it with adequate storage space. And every large window occupies wall space that could be devoted to a closet or cupboard. From personal experience, I know that my current 19' Airstream trailer has fewer and smaller windows than my previous 27' Airstream, and this one has barely enough storage.

A class B motorhome with windows like a Lazy Daze would be seriously short of storage, and would likely be a tough sell. With a rig that small, you just can't have both multiple large windows and adequate storage. Class C motorhomes let you have both, and Lazy Daze achieved a near-perfect balance between windows and storage.

"The price for the model that is most similar to a Lazy Daze mid bath was around $300k a few months ago... The world’s gone crazy."

It's well to remember that comparing today's RV prices to yesterday's Lazy Daze prices is deceptive. Inflation is inevitable, and if Lazy Daze were still in business, their prices would be a lot higher than what most of us remember.

It would be interesting to see what Lazy Daze prices would have been in 2025/26.  Here is their last official price list from 2021:

With the big increases in labor and material costs, I bet a 31' model would be close to $200,000, maybe even more.
Nothing is getting cheaper any time soon.

I just cannot even consider a Mercedes with a diesel.  Too costly for maintenance and repair.  I do like the layout better than most others though.

The Winnebago that was built in Iowa yrs ago is NOT the same.  New is not better.  Today’s small RV’s are not ment to last.. Old Winnebago, Executive, Ford Condor, GMC… those old rigs were built to last.
My 94 TK 22.5 Chevy with a 454 Chevy-90K- Lazy Daze with the same referigerator always works!!
Truth be told my wife wants to sell the Daze and buy one of those Allegro Red things.. they look nice but are folks going to knock @ your door and say… ‘What year is your Lazy Daze?’

Lazy Daze owners have pride!   The pride in W is gone, they care about money not the RV’er.

"I do like the Coach House brand (I've enjoyed following Mike C's build but have hesitated asking what he paid for it) but as someone pointed out, where are the large windows?"

There are several reasons we decided to go with ordering our new Coach House Platinum IV. First of course is build quality, it is as good as it gets and better compared to any other motorhome on the market! I was fortunate to return to the factory several times during the build stages of our coach to see just how they did it in detail. It was good to speak with the employees about details of their individual installation methods. If I were to build a coach I would do it the same way as CH.
Yes, there are fewer windows but the ones my coach has are adequate. There is a large window at the dinette, a smaller one at the kitchen counter, one in the bathroom, one above the queen bed headboard and another escape hatch window in the rear of the bedroom.
The slide out aluminum frames are powered by hydraulic cylinders. The frame move on heavy rollers and replaceable nylon glides(in & out). This is much better than electric motors and gears which are prone to failure. We will probably never use the dinette slide as with it in there is still plenty of walking room between it and the large kitchen counter. The queen bed could be used without sliding out but is much better with it out (on the passenger side of the coach). All the sealant between the floor  and the fiberglass body is 3M 5200. This also seals all the openings through the one piece floor. It was good to see where all the wiring and plumbing was located behind the walls.
The only propane powered items are the furnace, the on demand water heater and the three burner cooktop. Everything else is electric. A 600 amp lithium battery bank can supply AC & DC power throughout the coach via a 3000W inverter. This includes the RecPro heat pump, refrigerator and convection microwave. There is 400W roof solar panels, a Onan 4000W genset and a DC to DC charger interface with the Ford alternator. When plugged to shore power there is a Progressive Dynamics 45 amp converter downstream from a surge guard for charging the batteries.
A lot of the systems in the coach can be monitored and controlled by our iPhone apps. Interior LED lighting is excellent.
Yes, we paid a high price for this coach (+250K) but having the quality and special features they added for us makes it worth it for us.
