Title: Alternator Not Charging Fix
Post by: jor on October 15, 2025, 02:59:38 pm
This one's for general information if you ever experience a no-charge situation.

In another thread I mentioned that I wired in a louder turn beeper. Weirdly, after experiencing the joy of listening to that little siren, I started the engine to see what it sounded like in a noisy passenger compartment (engine cowling was off). The beeper beeped well but I noted that the alternator was not charging the battery.

Turned out that when I was screwing around with the interior fuse box I had jiggled loose #15. The owner's manual indicates that #15 is the "Trailer battery charge relay, Cluster, BSM." Anyhow, no fuse in #15 = no charging.

The Ford provided me with a Check Engine Light but I had loaned my scanner to my son-in-law so I'm not sure if the CEL would have pointed me to the fuse.

I have caused many problems working on things like this; it's part of the game. You were smart enough to check the area you were working in to see if something could have been knocked loose.
I doubt that any code would have directed you to the fuse; it would probably have been a message that the alternator wasn't charging. Codes indicate a problem, but many times do not give a cause. It's up to the mechanic to decipher the code and track down the issue.
Good catch.
