Title: Paint Source and Running Board Tread
Post by: Davehca on September 28, 2025, 04:35:01 pm
I've completed the repair on the running board and am now looking to repaint and put on the non slip surface.

I'm having an issue try to find the right color paint. I'm looking for the Dark Green metallic. I see from the chart on that it is either Cardinal 6629-4387 or Dupont L9988. I cannot seem to find a source for either of these using an on line search. If anyone knows where I can get some I would be most grateful.

At the same time I need to replace the non slip surface. I did try some peel and stick before but it came off in the hot sun. I'm sure surface preparation had a lot to do with it, but I did spend quite a bit of time getting off all of the old glue and wiping with acetone.

I've been looking at truck bed liner and wonder if anyone else has used it. I had something similar put in the bed of my track and have been very happy with it.

Sorry to tell you that all the color codes are obsolete.
The only way to get matching paint is to have it custom-mixed. You might be lucky to find a local auto paint store that can custom-mix paint and pack it in a 2K spray can.  Take off one of the exterior hatch covers to use when matching the paint. Well-matched two-part polyurethane paints can look Factory with proper preparation and spray technique.
Two-part 2K paints are hazardous to breathe, and proper precautions need to be taken. Wear a new, high-quality organic respirator, wear protective clothing, and have good ventilation.
Painting outdoors is suggested. Read the instructions carefully; two-part spray cans are used differently from normal spray cans.

Organic respirator

When using an organic respirator, if the smell of solvent is detected, the filter is done and should be replaced immediately. Store the filter between uses in the air-tight bag the respirator comes in, to keep it from becoming contaminated.

Herculiner is tough stuff and should work well on the step. 3M Safetwalk tape is available in many widths; you could cut a new cover. I agree that removing the old adhesive is a PIA. Welcome to RV repair, little is easy.

Larry.

Before the factory closed, I ordered a replacement piece of non-slip for my my driver side door.

You might check with Todd and see if he has any left over: [Contact info for Todd Miller (for Lazy Daze parts)] (https://www.lazydazeowners.com/index.php?topic=38603.0)

Thanks for the info Larry and Rich.

At this point I'm thinking of just going with the Herculiner.  The areas where I need the paint are not that big so I'm going to see what I can do to fake it. I looked at custom mix  and they are quoting $118 on line at cardinal when I put in the paint code.

I know what you mean by owning an RV Larry.  In the 5 years I've had the LD I think I've spent more time working on it than sleeping in it.

Reading that, I know that I've spent about the same amount of time working on it as sleeping in it.  That repair/alteration curve is increasing, trending to more repairs than alterations (improvements).
Sadly the amount of time sleeping in it may be decreasing too.
On that note I masked off the aggressive tread material and painted it a medium gloss black. It is still non skid but doesn't want to remove as much skin if I slip over it.         RonB

Hi—I was successful in sending the paint codes to Exact Match Car Paint Made Easy | AutomotiveTouchup (http://www.AutomotiveTouchUp.com) and they were able to supply both shades of color and the white as well.  As for the step, I ordered grit from Amazon,(aluminum oxide blast material),taped off the step area, put down a heavy coat of black Rustoleum and sprinkled the grit into the wet paint.  When dry, brushed away the excess grit—a year later it still looks good.

RE: running boards. I used grip tape for skateboards on 2  LDs and it held up in AZ summers and winters in NJ. It looked like the original grip and we were very satisfied with it.

I called the Exact Match paint company and gave them the DuPont color code (L9988). They are going to make some and ship it to me. They are not guaranteeing an exact match as it is a motor home color. Hopefully it won't be too far off. If it is it's just the step and will be better than it is at the moment.

I also ordered the Herculiner truck bed liner as I have it on my pick up truck bed for about 10 years and still looks good. If it works out I'll put it on the other running board and back bumper.

I'll post pictures of the running board repair and repaint when completed.

Thank you for all of the replies

Using grit is a great idea. The steps need a gripping surface to prevent slipping when wet. I have a can of grit left over from painting a porch with slick concrete.

When you ordered the touch-up paint, did you call them to see if they could match the paint codes?, There is nothing on the website that shows a way to order with just paint codes.
The paint code for our LD is listed on the driver's side door jam, but it does not list the manufacturer of the paint.

I went to the web site and it looked like you can only match vehicle paint codes. So I called them and told them it was for a Lazy Daze RV and said I had the Cardinal and Dupont codes. I gave her the Dupont code and she was able to find it. I got the code from this forum in 2024. Not sure who posted it.

Thanks for the quick answer, I need to give them a call.

Sorry I didn’t get right back to you as I only check the forum once a day in the AM.   Glad you got the info needed!
