Title: What is this antenna and has anyone relocated or deleted it?
Post by: RangelessRyan on September 13, 2025, 03:52:24 am
Hi I am planning a full solar off grid setup on my lazy daze and want to know what this antenna is and if I can relatively easily remove or relocate it, any advice would be appreciated, I already plan to remove the TV aerial thats not shown in this picture.

That's your cab AM/FM radio antenna.

Welcome to the Group RangelessRyan;  It would help if we knew what year and floor plan you have,  There are variations throughout the years that affect the wiring.  To me that looks like the dash radio antenna (car).  The wiring was installed while your Lazy Daze was being built, and it usually comes across the ceiling towards the driver side,  down through the wall near the cabover window. I believe that (in mine) it comes down the 'A' pillar under the trim and under the dash to the radio.  A circuitous path that would be hard to replicate without major alterations to the inside walls.
That antenna, sometimes accompanied by a nearby CB radio antenna (that you don't have), has a spring at the base to allow tree branches and similar clearance obstacles to not damage it.
Take pictures and let us know how you proceed with removing the TV antenna. A Winegard Sensar (batwing) antenna, and/or a 'sat' dish in some models have become  obsolescent item(s) that get in the way of a good solar panel layout. A  Starlink mini in the photo?    RonB

Thanks @rich and @RonB - I dont need the radio to be honest i hardly use it while driving and for the most part play spotify playlists if I ever have it on at all solar is more important to me. I will probably remove the antenna, cap the end of the wire and leave it where it is in the roof, then get a patch piece of aluminum and seal with dicor, I also have the big TV batwing antenna which will also have to go. That is actually a gen 2 actuated starlink that I modified to be flat and run on DC power from my old rig. Im full time on the road for the last 2 years, just upsized from a 1989 sportsmobile. Plan on 800w of solar on the roof with about 1000ah of lithium batteries, in the midst of planning the solar setup right now.

I don’t use mine but it is still a good “feeler” for tree branches and anything high I missed on my “get out and look” rounds. Better than tearing off my fans or ac!

I threw away the satellite dish and used the mounting base for my Starlink. Didn’t have to drill through the roof and I can rotate it if I wish.

Ryan,
it's been 2 months since this post so you are probably finished with this project, but....
LD used some sort of a plug/cap on the original placement of the radio antenna on the fender.  Looks like they just unscrewed the antenna and filled it with a capped screw.  You probably would make an easier job of it by just unscrewing the antenna and capping the antenna mount, and you should have enough clearance under a solar panel for what is left on the roof. It doesn't have to be flat.
