Title: Too Hot for ABS
Post by: jor on August 15, 2025, 03:57:07 pm
It's been toasty down here for a couple of months. We plan on leaving for the NW soon so I hopped up topside and... whoa! Didn't expect this!!! It's an ABS exterior box. Think I might get a different brand.

I had one of these on top of our LD,  used for a solar junction box for 15 years. It gets hot here, too.

The PVC is rated for exterior usage. I added a terminal board to it for the connections.

Did you paint it black? That might be your problem...
Note that the spare tire cover in the back is ABS.

Regular ABS isn't UV-stabilized.  Do you know if this was an outdoor/sun-rated box?

So, I use aluminum Bell boxes (now Hubbel or Raco). Good for anything the solar panels can take.  RonB

I don't know about sun rated but it was advertised as an outdoor box.

Yes, I did paint it black. Never considered that. I wonder...

Couldn't find a metal one in the size I wanted.

"Yes, I did paint it black."

There's your problem, or most of it anyway. If you're going to paint anything that lives on the roof, paint it white.

The Rolling Stones might disagree.  😉
