Title: Any advantage to change converter?
Post by: tedeboy on May 19, 2025, 11:50:34 am
My 2021 has a Parallax 8355 in it.

I put in a PD converter in my previous LD and it was a great improvement but the old converter was junk essentially.

I've noticed this Parallax converter's fan comes on frequently and it makes noise. The PD converter I had didn't do this.

Any other advantages to changing out the converter?

I think the main advantage is that it’s lithium compatible. Maybe some of our electrical gurus can speak to other advantages.  I ended up replacing the Parallax with a PD converter but when we did our solar upgrade, the Xantrex inverter/charger assumed the converter/charger duties. The PD now is an expensive place holder in the power center.

A converter set for lithium charges to a slightly higher voltage, most standard converters will work fine for lithium.

When charging discharged lithiums, the converter's fan will run more and longer due to the high amperage demands that lithium have until they are nearly fully charged. This is why lithiums charge much faster.
AGM/lead-acid batteries internal resistance or impedance rises rapidly as the battery charges, reducing the amperage it pulls, leading to longer charge times and less converter fan run time. The converter is not working as hard.
