There is a plug on the bottom of the cover, what is this for? Is the cover broken off? I’ve attached a pic of the plug and the wiring inside.
Hi Art; Looking at the picture again, I think the flap over the socket is still intact. Just some of the paint is missing. (I didn't get a picture of the wiring inside.) There should be 4 pins in that socket with trailer (car) towing signals. Left turn/brake, Right turn/Brake, Clearance/running lights, and a ground. A previous owner may have installed a duplicate socket with two or three more wires attached below the bumper. LD put a six pin, RV standard is 7 pin. Using a more standard plug, with a powered wire for charging a towed vehicle's battery (supply power for an auxiliary brake), a brake signal to energize a trailer brake or auxiliary brake in a towed vehicle or trailer. The factory switched to providing a 6 terminal socket, mounted under the bumper for 2007. That socket on the tire cover disappeared then. The 'faux' cover is only for your 30' or 31' floorplan, and the 26.5' 2000 and newer MidBath. For both 23.5' (24') floorplan and 26.5' (27') RB floorplan, there is a spare under the cover. Older models of LD have the tire with a tire shaped cover. RonB
Ron, I have to disagree. First, the cover is definitely broken off—the two stubs on either side of the spring are all that’s left of it.
And the three blade-type slots don’t look like any trailer connector I’ve seen. On older Lazy Dazes I’ve seen and owned, there’s a four-pin round connector in that location.
So I don’t know what Art has there, but with only three pins, it’s probably not usable with anything today.

On my 2006 it’s a plug for a trailer. One picture shows the cover closed and the other shows it open
I think the cover is there and it does look broken. I bet if one gave it a little pry, it would fall apart in your hand. I replaced ours with the seven and pin because the 4 pin is a little hard to come by around here.

Thanks for posting those pictures, GMFL! I was completely wrong. What I thought were three contact slots were actually three ridges molded onto the cover, which is NOT broken. (Or at least, not broken off.) And underneath that cover is a good ol' round four-pin trailer connector.
I'd just never seen one like that. Every one I've encountered looked like this:

Hi Art; I replaced a friend's six pin trailer socket on his (red) 2001 MB, with a new 7 pin 'universal' RV socket. I removed and blanked off his original tire cover socket, and repurposed the wires to add a two (U.S.) wire to three wire (European/Asian) adaptor to provide a brake signal. No tire in there anyway. The four pin plug seems to be very hard to find nowadays. I still have a functioning socket on the tire cover of my rig, but added a buffered 7 pin socket mounted on the bumper.
So the picture I took then, was to show added reflectors on the bumper, needed because the LED tail lights don't reflect well. You can see the new 7 pin socket at the left of the re-enforced receiver on the bumper. Sorry I didn't take a better picture, but that rig has since gone to a new owner on the east coast. RonB
I put a new hole and 7-pin socket in closer to the hinge - more out of the way and easier to route the larger gauge cabling I use to drive the custom relay box I mounted adjacent. For light signals to trigger the relays I tapped into the four-pin connector. Leaving it intact allows compatibility for the event of towing some older trailer should that be needed.

When wiring LDs for towing, I left the 4-pin plug intact and added a 7-pin. Options are always good.
For our usage, the 4-pin plug is used for the added towing lights on the bike rack. When carrying a bike(s) the LD's right tail light is partially obscured. the added lights add a measure of safety.
Like Steve, we used relays years ago to boost the voltage to the Jeep's towing tail lights, LEDs are not as sensitive to low voltage and eliminate the need for the relays.
