Title: Fake Tire Cover Lock
Post by: ArtJr92110 on November 26, 2024, 01:25:40 pm
Most of the outside storage doors on my rig have locks on them, however the fake back tire door does not, or at least my 2006 LD does not.
Did Lazy Daze ever make a lock for this compartment, or does anyone know of or has modified their back door with an aftermarket lock?
My 31' back storage has doors on both side that lock, but with the back compartment door not being able to be locked, it seems kind of useless to have locks on the side doors.

Well, on my 2013 31 IB, I use this procedure to get into the the compartment where the spare tire actually lives:
1. Use the CH751 key (which only fits approximately 94% of the locks on RVs and trailers) to open the right side door.
2. Grope around for the 5/8 " box wrench
3. Remove the 5/8 " nut securing the fake spare tire door.
4. Use the CH751 key (see ref above) to open the hatch.
5. Try to remember why I wanted to get in the compartment this way.

YMMV

I tied a rope around the tire to help pull the tire out of it's compartment. I did this because after the first time I removed the tire to check air pressure (a good thing to do at least once a year) I hurt my back leaning over and pulling.  YMMV

Hi ArtJr;  My T/K has an actual tire behind the bustle. The tire is locked in place securely. I store a spare hose inside the tire.  There are generic tire locks for spares available and you could probably adapt one to lock the cover.
However it is a lot easier to replace a tire and wheel than the flimsy ABS wheel cover on the back.
You can always fasten the tire down with a chain inside the motorhome to secure it in place.     RonB

Hi Jerry; I put a tire sender (non flow through) on my spare that displays on my TST Tpms.  Useful for seeing what the temperature is outside also. A constant reminder of what pressure the spare has.
For a friends MB I attached a remote hose and affixed it just inside the side compartment door.  The bad part is that at full inflation I couldn't get it out of the compartment. The tire would swell up just enough to not fit through the opening.  I ran out of time for the modification but I was going to trim the aluminum surround of the side door enough, (just 1/4" needed, and it wouldn't show) to get the spare out at full inflation.  My friend did have a 12vdc compressor to inflate the tire to full pressure if needed.  RonB

So you don't have a locked compartment behind the "spare tire cover" ?  On our 2018 31IB the door inside has a standard ch751 keyed lock on it. What does the inside door use to hold it closed?  If someone changed it to a twist latch you can return it to a lock. Check the thickness of your door and you can order a replacement from amazon. The "spare tire cover" closure nut was a pain to use.  We replaced it with a black ball knob from Menards.  I don't remember the size, if you take the nut into any place that has hardware they can match the size. No more tool needed to open the back cover.  We currently don't store anything inside the tire cover. The spare tire is not easy to get to but we found that it had a tendency to shift back.  We installed a strap with buckles (salvaged from a decommissioned life jacket) to keep it from moving.

I have to apologize, there is a lockable door behind the fake tire carrier. My mistake, but I appreciate all the feedback and comments, so helpful and made me go take a second look at the area. I’m new to this site, I’m not sure how to add photos to this quick reply. I don’t see a tab to add photos or attachments.
