Title: Battery Cable Size
Post by: Ed & Margee on May 10, 2024, 03:49:19 pm
Perhaps someone knows the recommended cable size for connecting battery 1 to battery 2 for the 6V house batteries?   I’m appreciative of help.

2 gauge was used by the Mothership.

Note that 2 ga is not the same as 2.0 ga...

"Note that 2 ga is not the same as 2.0 ga..."

Actually, I've never seen wire referred to as "2.0 ga." In the American Wire Gauge (AWG) system, decimal points aren't used. I think you meant "2/0."

Yes, AWG 2 ("two gauge") is not the same as AWG 00, usually referred to as 2/0 or "two ought." Where Europeans sensibly rate wire sizes in square millimeters (which have a direct relationship to ampacity and voltage drop), our  system rates increasing sizes thus:

AWG 6 ("six gauge")
AWG 4
AWG 2
AWG 1
AWG 0
AWG 00 or 2/0 ("two ought")
AWG 0000 4/0 ("four ought")

... and so on. Yes, the smaller the number, the larger the wire... until you get to zero, and then the more zeros, the larger the wire. For example, 4/0 looks like this:

 X

I know I'm being pedantic, but as Steve said, it's important not be confused by our confusing system. Just be grateful we don't have to specify cable lengths in fathoms. ;-)
