I’m doing some leak repair and had to tear out some interior ceiling. Went down to the studs and aluminum roof in some spots. Does anyone know the thickness of the plywood directly under the aluminum? It looks like quarter inch but that seems a little thick, yet one-eighth seems thin. Kinda hard to measure accurately so I’m asking. Thanks for any advice.
I don't, but you can measure it by removing the A/C intake filter and looking at the roof sandwich in that area.

Hi Remicks; For many little items I use underlayment. It is a 3 ply plywood about 3/16" and comes in 4 x 8 foot sheets. It is used to give a plywood (grade C or D) a smooth surface to put sheet vinyl over. Otherwise imperfections in the surface will become visible as the vinyl settles into it. RonB

Thanks Ron. I’m using similar grade for the actual ceiling, but the sub-roof next to the aluminum doesnt really need quality surface. The trick will be sliding the right width boards between the rafters and the aluminum. I’m expecting to be working in pieces but the right width - easy to slide though, strong enough to add needed support to the aluminum roof to hold my weight on top - thats the trick.
Going to see if I can measure as Rich advised. The A/C cover is off already, but it can be tough to try and see stuff at these angles. Wish me luck…
Remicks… if you could post pictures of this interesting project, it could be valuable to future DIYers with a similar repair. And best of luck.
Hi Remicks; The underlayment isn't needed for its smoothness in this situation, but it is the right thickness of .197" or about 3/16" thick. RonB
Thanks Ron, that is a perfect thickness. I’ll keep it in mind as we purchase materials.
Ed&Margee - great idea on logging this project. I never think about doing that kinda stuff until after I’m done! I’ll start taking pics and posting progress as it goes. It may take longish - grandbabies and all that.
Thanks all.
