Title: Hot Water Heater pulsing
Post by: Ross and Beverly Taylor on May 04, 2022, 09:22:40 am
Our hot water heater ignites fine and continues to run, but it occasionally will lose propane or ignition and for less than a second pause and reignite.  All other propane appliances run normally.  This has been going on for a few months and I have been unable to determine the source of the problem.  Suggestions would be appreciated.

If you know anything about propane burners, check the flame sensor and make sure it is clean. Also check and make sure you don't have too much air. You would see a very crisp blue flame, maybe lifting off the burner. You also don't want to see a very lazy yellow tipped flame, this will create soot.  Mess with these only if you know about propane burners. The flame sensor will have a wire attached to it, it might also double as your spark igniter. The flame area on these need to be clean. I don't have any visual to help you out, sorry.

Thanks for advice.  Mothership said even though flame was blue it could be spider webs (I previously blew out tube) or an air mixture.  I hope to apply all suggestions and hopefully have a solution.

If there is too much air allowing the flame to blow out, the flame will also be louder, so adjusting for a lower noise level while keeping the flame blue usually works well. Adjustment is usually done by loosening a small setscrew on the side of the burner tube, sliding the tube to adjust the flame, then re-tightening.

Adjusting the airflow eliminated the problem.  Thanks for the advice!
