I'm currently in Puerto Penasco and decided to "finally" have my 1998 Lazy Daze repainted. I decided on a combination of a shade of blue with a teal color. The white (which looks like a sea-foam green in some lights) was fine so I picked the color combination to better blend with that paint. I also added some silver stripes. Also, I had some very minor body work done (bubbles on side from now corrected ceiling leak). Apparently there are three levels of clear coats and I had the middle one with three coating layers.
My apologies to the Lazy Daze "purists" for deviating from the regular color scheme.
I actually spent one night in Painting Perfections (a.k.a. Chuy's shop) in a Barrio with a dirt street complete with a locked gate with barbed wire and guard dogs. However, my RV was inside the bay with the door locked but it was still a bit of an "adventure." There are a couple of areas that are going to be completed here at the RV park tomorrow, but today people came by to "ogle" at my Lazy Daze... I'll post the finished product after the "tweaks" are completed.

Why apologize? How many of our LD folks are still driving a 'stock' rig. Come on, not one modification???
There are many like it but this one is mine! ;) 8)
Love it! Purple may be in my future! :-D
Do you feel comfortable sharing the cost of the paint job? I can take "no" for an answer. :-)

Not at all - $2,300 (and because he and another painter are "contracted" only for this RV park, the park apparently gets $200 of that). He told me if I need anything else painted to contact him and come to his shop directly. He's done this for 18 years and everyone says "he's the best" in Puerto Penasco.
It's definitely worth a trip here (only 60 miles from the U.S. border in Lukeville, AZ). I usually stay at a dry camp for $10.00/night but I decided to treat myself to this park with full hook-ups and a hot tub ($680/month).

Aw, thanks! I have to say his work exceeded my expectations and I feel like I have a brand new Lazy Daze!
Such a deal on the paint job and the accomodations! Time to start saving.
Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to the final result!
Looking forward to seeing the final results. How many days does it take them to complete the paint job? What is the name of the RV park that gets the $200 that you stay at. Really peaked my husbands and my interest in getting Lazy repainted. Thank you
Impatiently waiting for the After images! How did it turn out?! The colors looked so pretty!!!
I am wondering about the stripes. Did they remove the vinyl stripes and replace or ?
The mothership can send you the pinstripes if you want them, even for my 1997.

Wow, have 2 rv's that could use a refresher
Kristin, I checked with Todd at the MS about a year ago and sent him a picture of the tape on my LD. They still carry the same (or very similar) tape. However, since I had the stripes repainted a different color a few years ago and would like to freshen up the tape, But Todd didnt have any suggestions as to how to do it. So that is why I asked if the tape had been removed. I understand that there is a large eraser type wheel for removing vinyl stickers that Amazon sells, but was hoping to find out if the Mexican painting company had a better method.

The stripes were painted on. I think in the long run they'll last longer.

It takes about week or so depending on the number of people who are waiting. Painting Perfection (a.k.a as "Chuy") has a strong following of satisfied customers and he "does it right." Mexico is "Mexico" and the RV Park (Playa Bonita) gets a 10% "kickback." However, Chuy told me in the future to contact him directly and he would do it all in his shop to avoid the extra cost. In all honesty, I found some "blips" but Chuy made good and corrected any paint errors. The final cost was $350 USD more as he repainted my door and clear coated my mermaid mural on the rear tire. The final bill was $2,650 USD.
Cheryl, I am a little confused. Did you have the vinyl tape between the painted stripes removed? If so, did Chuy do it? My tape stripes look terrible and I would just as soon remove them.

Yes... I live in the Desert Southwest and the painted on striping with 3 coats of clear coat will hopefully last a lot longer...
I spent one night at "Chuy's" shop in a Barrio with a dirt road. I was totally safe, but it "did" feel a little creepy...
We had our first lazy daze painted there many years ago they did a good job we were happy with the work
I'm sorry for the quality of the photos, but I don't have great Internet access here at the RV park. I'm "over the moon" with the cost and the results. It's definitely worth a trip. My RV has been painted, but not washed and waxed yet...
O M G it's sooo beautiful!!! and the mermaid on the back...so perfect!!
congrats on your beauty. Love it!
My RV has been painted, but not washed and waxed yet...
I hope you know that a newly painted vehicle should not be waxed for a long time. I think the common wisdom is 2-3 months, but please research this time frame yourself since I’m not real sure myself.
Gorgeous! I'm very jelly! :)
Love the paint job. The mermaid on your tire cover is spectacular. Thank you for the info.
And for Parussky, (Rich)... I've used the eraser wheel from Amazon, and it works well, but not fast. I had two Ryobi 18 v drill motors. They would overheat and run out the batteries quickly. So I had two batteries charging and two in use, swapping motors as they warmed up. I was taking off one of those US 'outline of states' map. The pinstripe decals might take a few days, but the paint underneath will look new once it is cleaned up. I used a chemical adhesive remover like Goo Gone. The decals have been protecting the paint. If the stripes are bad they come off faster.
I also took off the Lazy Daze logo on the front. Sunlight and a sleet storm had caused it to go bad. Like sandblasting with ice. Removing it took a while. I haven't replaced it yet. Some campground rangers (Morro Bay) are expecting the logo on the front, even though the rest of the paint is 'stock' and ask me if I'm with the Lazy Daze group. The Logo in back is still intact. (with a 22 year old motorhome last Monday the 14th.) RonB
thanks for all of this info... WOW

It actually depends on how many people have come down to Puerto Penasco specifically to have paint work done. Painting Perfection (a.k.a. Chuy) has quite a following due to his eighteen years of experience and the quality of his work.
What is the name of the RV park that gets the $200 that you stay at.
There are several RV parks here in Puerto Penasco. Different parks have "agreements" with different painters. I'm currently staying at Playa Bonita RV Park, and had to move here due to his agreement (10%) that the RV park receives. However, he told me if I wanted anything painted in the future to contact him directly and bring it to his shop to bypass the RV park cut. His painting shop isn't far from the RV park and he has a 30 amp electrical outlet.
Really peaked my husbands and my interest in getting Lazy repainted. Thank you

Yes, all of the vinyl striping was removed and everything was painted on...

Beautiful! I’m jealous. I would love to get mine repainted.
This is awesome info. When we are ready to go down that road, we will reference this thread. Thanks for sharing!
This is so cool! The price is crazy for a full paint.
Question: Do these guys also do body work?
Do you have a contact number?
Many thanks!
Mark
"The price is crazy for a full paint."
It is a very good price, but if I understood desertdiva's original post to this thread, it was not a full paint job: "The white... was fine so I picked the color combination to better blend with that paint."
In other words, they only repainted the colored portions. Nothing wrong with that, since those are the parts that fade. I had the same thing done in 2014 by the LD factory (for upwards of $10,000). But in either case, a full repaint--white areas included--would have been more costly.
Thanks for clarifying. Do they do body work?

Actually, it wasn't a full paint. The white part that looks (sea-foam green tinted in some lights) was not repainted as the paint has held up remarkably well for a 1998 RV. However, I did have the RV entrance door repainted to match the sea-foam white tinted parts. They do indeed do body work as I had a "bubble" on the side from a minor ceiling leak that was repaired (and treated) on the inside. There were some strange bubbles from the leak on the outside, and it's now fixed. I'm attaching a photo of his business card.

You're quite welcome. Chuy has quite a following and many happy "repeat customers" who get other vehicles painted. I was lucky to have my work mostly done in his shop so there was no wind to affect the paint job.
Beautiful! I’m jealous. I would love to get mine repainted.
Well, plan a trip "South of the Border!" You can not only get your Lazy Daze painted, but enjoy some delicious margaritas and shrimp...

Actually, I asked and his son told me at least 60 days. I looked it up and you are spot on correct. I'm hoping I can stay pretty close to the 60 day date and then have it waxed with a high quality product before I leave. Wash and wax is $2.50/foot! Thanks for reminding me...
This was inspiring, Cheryl. We’d love to do something similar. What’s the best way to contact Chuy? I couldn’t get that phone number to work. Thanks a lot,
Sasha

I'm sorry, but that's all the information I have for him. However, I can tell you he's "crazy busy" right now and Puerto Penasco will have even more people coming down soon as colleges have spring break in March. However, he's always here at Playa Bonita RV Park and you can absolutely connect with him while staying here. He usually does small jobs here, but if you're getting large areas painted he'll probably have you drive to his shop (which is pretty close to the RV park).
Ok thanks a lot- I was finally able to connect w him today. Will see if it can work, fingers crossed. Thanks

Any idea what type of paint was used to paint Milagro?
Larry
I thought that Chuy used Mexican Sherwin Williams paints with high voc formulations not allowed in US?
I thought that Chuy used Mexican Sherwin Williams paints with high voc formulations not allowed in US?
No, I actually "did my homework." ;)
Now we know the manufacturer but still do not know the type of paint used.
Obviously, they didn't use the two-part polyurethane that our LDs are painted with due to the toxicity to the painter and environment unless a properly equipped (expensive) spray booth is used.
I suspect the type of paint used is what parussky suggested, similar to the acrylic paint LD used in the 80s and earlier before US environmental laws eliminated its use here, due to the high VOCs.
Larry
Sorry if I offended you, I wasn't questioning your judgment, I'm genuinely curious, my nineteen-year-old 2003 LD has been parked outside all its life and needs the lower-trim painted and wide stripe replaced. My wife and I plan on our 2003 being our last RV, if possible, but spending $20,000+ on a Factory paint job is not going to happen.
There are many types of paint, the polyurethanes last almost forever with care, a trait that isn't that needed on an older motorhome. A paint that will last ten years is long enough for my LD's needs and acrylic paint is fine for this application, it's what LD used for many years.
BTW, your LD looks nice, it appears to be the same color I painted a dune buggy about half a century ago.

Larry
I'll chip in with Larry here. At 22 years the paint is having issues on my LD, and $15 K for a paint job would be an unwise expense considering what it is worth. Like you I would just need the non white areas, (blue parts for me) painted. Acrylics will last at least 10 more years, and might last longer than me! But I'm the type that likes to know more about the paint. I also plan on simplifying the striping and just have that painted on.
Larry knows that Steve Tivy had his rig painted about 2 years ago, in the L.A. area I believe, and had many issues with coverage and peeling in some locations. I saw it just days after the paint job, and it wasn't finished. Small defects that the painter was going to fix. I think that was also some type of acrylic. I haven't seen his rig since then. I suspect it is all squared away now.
Those of us with 'Vintage' rigs are following you, wishing you well. RonB

Larry - I owe you an apology. I've been single for many years and sometimes "feel the weight" of making decisions on my own - sometimes obsessing if I've made the right one. I appreciate the advice that you (and others) have given to me on this forum and I apologize for the snarky "knee jerk" comment (which I deleted).
Upkeep on an RV is a seemingly never ending task, and I sincerely appreciate when people have taken the time to offer their insight to help troubleshoot various issues and problems I've had with my Lazy Daze.
My philosophy regarding RV repairs and upgrades is they should at least be better than before. My DIY projects are seldom any better than average and way less than an accomplished handy person.
And this particular project looks to be a solid home run with bases loaded. I just hope to see this LD someday.
