Title: An alternative to a car alarm system
Post by: tedeboy on April 24, 2021, 12:30:04 pm
I had a toggle ignition kill switch installed in a hidden place on a 4x4 Toyota truck I once had.
If the goal is anti-theft I would consider one for a new rig.

But then again,  how often are they stolen?
My truck type back then was stolen a lot.

On second thought,  aren't most new vehicles equipped with keys that have chips embedded rendering a kill switch moot?

A lot of new vehicles use an RF transmitter to communicate between the fob and the car.
There are readers out there that can intercept that signal, capture it and then put it on a new fob.
To disable a vehicle these days, it seems the boot is good. Hard to defeat easily.

One might contact Ravelco.com  it is a great anti-theft device for cars and trucks. I don't know if they are used in rv's.

An interesting device, it take professonal installation and is quite involved, with a lot of modications to the chassis’s electrical system.
Just don’t lose the coded Plug, no one will be able to start the vehicle until a new Plug can be ordered and delivered.

There are many ways and places to hide a kill switch. I prefer adding a switch to the fuel pump .
An intersting way to wire a kill switch is to run the ignition or fuel pump circuit though a a slo-blow fuse, with a bypass switch.
What is a Slow-blow Fuse? (http://www.learningaboutelectronics.com/Articles/Slow-blow-fuse.php)

When armed, the engine will start and run for a very short time, just long enough to move a few feet before the fuse blows. This stops the engine and leaves the thieves sitting in the street in a dead vehicle that refuses to restart. Flipping the hidden kill swtich bypasses the blown fuse, allowing you to restart your vehicle.
Many years ago, this system saved my VW from being taken in the middle of the night, I heard the engine start and then stop a few moments later, the car was found sitting in the street with both doors open and no one around.

Antitheft is antithetical to theft as autocorrupt is to autocorrect.
