Title: Gaffer tape vs. Duct Tape
Post by: Joan on July 28, 2020, 11:40:00 am
Which tape, gaffer or duct, would be the more durable, better "stick" choice for binding the edges of Refectix window shades?

Not sure what you are trying to bind on the reflectix.
If you want to seal the edges, you should use tyvek housewrap tape.
My experience with duct and gaffer tape on the reflectix is that over time it dries out and comes off

Tyvek tape is tough plastic tape (a bit expensive), but it will not dry out, and will stay on the reflectix foil.
It works well to tape items down as well, although i'm not sure what type of glue residue is left if you want to remove it.

I've had good long term luck with foil (HVAC) tape on the edges of reflectix.  I made a 2 layer piece for the shower dome that has stayed attached for almost 10 years now and has held up to me inserting and removing it many times each year.

I've never tried duct or gaffers tape.

Thanks for the suggestions; I appreciate knowing the options. I will check out the Tyvek and HVAC foil tapes!

Foil tape. Readily available, doesn't crack or dry out, lasts a l-o-n-g time, and looks good on Reflectix.

Foil tape sounds like a good idea.
I was thinking material, glued on - someone had a picture of that for cab side window which their upholsterer did for them (I think as a side effect of showing off new chairs).
I  forget who had that picture though.

Why even tape the edges? I cut the Reflectix slightly oversize, about a 1/4 inch. Pressing it into the windows keeps it put. I use it for all vents, skylight, front, and side cab windows. [Never used it on the thermal windows] The Reflectix is over 10 years old and works fine.

Another insulation point is cutting strofoam to fit between the stringers in upper bins. Use a short length of double sided tape to keep the foam in place.
