Title: Where R U These Daze?
Post by: Peter Weisel on July 14, 2020, 01:15:56 am
We are currently camped in Joseph Oregon, at the base of the outstanding Wallowa Mountains.  I know at lease some Lazy Daze folks are not just home posting, but out and about! We've seen 2 other LD's drive through Joseph in just the past week, which is about how many we saw in 3 months of traveling last year.

Hopefully you are able to get out this summer.  Getting out in nature has been great therapy against the stress of the times...

Where R U?

We are workers still, so we've done a few weekends trips. In June we went to Hillsborough River State Park in Florida and last weekend we went to Colt Creek State Park in Florida, both under 35 minutes from the house.   It is good to use the vehicles, nice to get out, helping us see what else to pack and being close to home makes it really easy to fit into a work week.

We are camped at Sowell COE campground on Lake Proctor near Comanche, TX.  A little warm, but a beautiful view.

I’m in Searsport ME, happy to have scored an ocean front site for the week! Then on to Bar Harbor before going home to Boston to figure out where I’ll be “working from home” from next !

I am at my super secret location.
This one is not for sharing.
It's been hot lately and have been running the generator for a few hours to use the AC.
Hope it cools down some, I don't want to have to move to higher elevations.

I left my rig in Springfield...Why oh why....Oh Yeah.

Now I’m enjoying a nice Oaxaca Mexican meal in Lincoln City, Oregon with my sister. Jacket weather. Rather chilly, actually.

Welcome to the Oregon Coast. No matter what time of year it is, always take a jacket, better still, a rain jacket.
If you want heat, come back home. We have plenty of it.

Five days until we escape to the cooler, high altitudes.

Peter,

A couple week ago we were in central Oregon touring around Prineville and Bend. We'll be back over in early August and will stay at Paulina Lake. I haven't been out to  Joseph but it's on our short list. Any advice  for camping  in Joseph?

Hi Steve,

It just depends what you are after.  2 years ago on our way to Glacier NP we stayed at at Wallowa SP and had a great time.   Decided we would come back some time (now) and "camp" in Joseph, population 1100.  We are at 5 Peaks RV park, which I recommend, in the heart of this small town. It works for what we were after this time - walking distance to shops/restaurants, and short distances to trail heads, the lake, and other day excursions. Kind of a home base.

Mind you that in general we almost NEVER go to RV parks and prefer public campgrounds or boon-docking.   Just wanted to do it different this time because we really fell for the people/atmosphere/location of Joseph and wanted to spend time in town.

I dare say there is no better hiking/backpacking in Oregon than here in the Wallowa Mountains and the Eagle Cap wilderness area.  It is simply Alp like and spectacular. We have backpacked in the Alps and the US and Canadian Rockies.  This is the S...t.   Bonus: Almost no one comes here because it is too far away from everywhere.

The three campsites I recommend are:

5 Peaks - if you want to be in town.

Wallowa State Park

Probably the most our style: Hurricane Creek Campground - 13 rustic sites on the creek, no reservations, $6 a night and a mile from the Alps like Hurricane Creek trailhead. (5ish miles from Joseph)  If you desire to keep your LD shiny and perfect, this may not be the place for you. 31ers need not try.

I doubt you will regret making it to Joseph, so give it a go ;-)  Paulina lake is on our list btw... How is it?

Enjoying the foothills of the California Gold Country.  Historic sites, wineries,  quaint towns, farmers markets and other things to see and do from this central location.

Aside from one hot spot, relatively low level of Covid-19 cases.
 ;)

We are in Ouray, CO exploring Jeep roads and crossing passes. It has been beautiful weather interspersed with thunderstorms.
We met another couple, camped nearby, who have a similar Jeep and we have enjoyed two days of exploring together. Remarkably, our homes are 50 miles apart and we share several mutual friends and other interests. We will share more trips in the future.
Moving to Silverton Friday.
I thought I might have fixed my creaky springs, but they are still noisy.

We always get great wifi when we camp next to our house!  Did so in May when the weather and Covid made it undesirable to head out...  Funny how we feel relaxed when we are in the LD.  Life's pressures just drift away for a little while ;-)

Hi Pete,

Thanks much for the great information about Joseph. Normally I wouldn’t stay in a RV park in town either but I can see that would be fun in Joseph. Maybe we will do a little stretch at all three campgrounds:^)

We had a great time at Paulina on my brother’s pontoon boat. We were actually at East Lake which is the neighboring lake next to Paulina Lake. My brother said fishing is better at East Lake but we didn’t catch anything! I think there are three or four campgrounds on the south sides of the lakes but this was just a day trip so I don’t have any direct experience with them. Our trip this August will be our first camping at Paulina.

Just returned home (Santa Barbara), after a refreshing tour through the mountains of Wyoming, Colorado and Utah.  One of our favorite places, Fremont Lake, borders the Wind River Mountains of Western Wyoming.  We camped there and elsewhere with friends and family, enjoyed bountiful wildflowers (Wyoming’s Big Horn Mountains, Colorado section of US 50, Utah’s All American Scenic Highway 12).  We enjoyed picked Apricots and enjoyed warm homemade Cherry Pie at Fruita campground, Capital Reef National Park.  We felt the stress of the pandemic and the city melt away and soon remembered the peace and wonder of nature.  What a wonderful thing, life in our Lazy Daze.

For our friends here with an Apple ID, send a PM if you wish to receive a link to our photo tour.

"...the mountains of Wyoming..."

About 155 miles (give or take depending on the route) SE of Fremont Lake is a small place called Sweetwater Station (SE of Lander) where an ancestor of mine was Postmistress with her husband. She had an affinity for other folks' mail and it cost her a year in the Territorial Prison. No judgment!    :o   ::)   ;)

I used to live in Cora, Wyoming.
The Wind River mountains are some of the most beautiful, and my favorite range.
Green River Lakes at the end of Hwy 352 is one of my favorite places to camp in the US.
Best time to go is July or August, after that, you could be in for some winter conditions at any moment.

Left home base in Colorado June 18th and headed to Wyoming, where my childhood friend and I met up and spent a long weekend with her family to honor her Mom's life.
I stayed in Wyoming visiting family and a few friends, then headed to Montana to visit more family after the 4th of July.
I am refilling my "family cup"  My father was the oldest of 14, so I am blessed to have the opportunity to spend time with them even with the current state of the world. Three family weddings have been postponed, so I had to improvise and get my family cup filled with smaller doses! Having my Lazy Daze has allowed me to do so safely. "Ophelia" is the perfect Covid-19 self-containment casa for the fur kids and me!
* Image is Ophelia parked at my Aunt Lori's place.  She owns Harvest House Farm outside of Bozeman MT.

Blessed Be!

Ugh ... our LD has been in storage since Nov 2019.  Not counting the trips to Ford dealerships.

First big chance to get away was April, but too many lockdowns.

Now with a few more weeks of  vacation in August, hoping to get to Pigeon Forge, its only a few hours away.

This is probably the longest we have gone without a real road trip in at least 15 years.

Not happy campers.

Mt. Shasta. At the first, the original Black Bear Diner established in 1995.

Turkey dinner in the parking lot. No inside dinning at this time. Hey that’s ok the dinner is great. I fully expect to be sawing logs once I walk back to the Mt. Shasta KOA.

Zzzzzzz...

Eaten there many times, but never in the parking lot! Get up to Castle Lake if you haven't been. It's pristine, spectacular, and less than 20 minutes away. As you approach park ing lot use the pullouts on the left as soon as you see them. You wont fit anywhere else. Great swimming and hiking...

I'm at Lake Tawakoni in Texas. There is another LD a couple of spots away from me.

I'll be here a week and might get a chance to say "hello" to the owner (from a distance of course :-) ).

Just returned from a short trip visiting Robert H. Tremen State Park in Ithaca, NY. Pretty amazing site to visit! Stopped by Mannings Dairy Farm and Hershey's Chocolate World in Pa. on the way back home to Maryland. Kept to ourselves and hit the tropical storm on the way home!

The waterfall is typical for that part of the country. Reminds me of the falls in Watkins Glen at the south end of Seneca Lake.  ;D

After cancelling our big summer trip to visit family in Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, Cape Cod and North Carolina we couldn't resist heading to Minnesota to help celebrate Marie's youngest granddaughter's 2nd birthday.  We've been traveling every day since Monday and will stop in Iowa for a few days to visit the in-laws' at the family farm (farming for 6 generations) before the final push on Wednesday.  One of our stops was Corbin, KY, where Colonel Sanders had his original Fried Chicken Restaurant now a KFC museum.  It was being renovated so no way to get in but we did a drive-thru takeout.   Went to the Daniel Boone National Forest and walked down to the Cumberland Falls.  Good to be on the road again with our Bossa Nova.  Hoping for another big trip next year; out west.

Well done Bill. I too have been resting up and cleaning up the back 40...yards that is. Inner city dwellers need ‘space’ too.

Heading back to Yellowstone in September. Plenty of space to stretch out there. Snagged two nights in Colter Bay on the way up via Jackson Hole.

Hi Chris,

It's a 2004 30IB.  When born it belonged to Dan and Kathy Jensen, who may still be members of the forum.  We are having a blast, learning a lot, and trying our best  to keep it in tip-top shape.

We remember camping with them at a LD Caravan GTG, many years ago.
It's been a long time. I believe they were friends of Older Fossil and wife.

Headed back to TN now. Virtual wave to the two Lazy Daze we saw today traveling west on 40 between Memphis and Little Rock.
