Title: Generator runs but no 110 AC.
Post by: Macmarty on March 26, 2020, 01:30:20 pm
Went out this morning to run monthly generator start and load.  To my surprise the generator started but no AC power in the rig. Stopped and restarted generator with same no AC power result. Could it be the transfer switch gone bad or something else with the generator AC?

Macmarty, I expect that the real generator experts will chime in, but until they do, let me offer this.  First, there is a breaker on the generator itself.  Try resetting it.

If that does not work, a bad ATS could look like what you are seeing.  If you have and know how to safely use a multimeter, you could open the ATS to see if there is voltage coming in from the generator.  Finally, in the breaker panel, the 30 amp input breaker might be open.  If you can get power from a shore connection, this breaker is NOT the problem.

As a thought, has an inboard surge protector been installed since the last test? They are typically set up with about a 3.5 min switching delay.

Thanks for the great suggestions re: no generator AC power. It was a tripped generator circuit breaker. The generator was serviced a month ago and it appears the circuit was tripped or moved to the off position. Thank goodness it was an easy fix. Will be using the generator at Rincon Beach, Ventura next week.

Thanks again

Off Topic but is Rincon still open? Isn't a State Beach? All California State Beaches are supposed to be closed.

Rincon is a Ventura County beach/campground.

I recall it to be on a first come basis.  With so many campground closures during this crisis, I suspect you best plan ahead for spot.  There was no reservation system in effect when I used to go there.  There was just a pay station that you used to get a spot with a two week max stay, if I recall correctly.  The locals seemed to figure out a way to reserve spots for themselves.  Years ago when I used to go to Rincon, I found that a lot of the locals that lived nearby would drive there during the week when a spot would be open, pay for a spot and leave a car in the space.  Then typically on a Friday drive up in their RV.  In short, it was always hard to find a spot in the summer or on a sunny weekend.

Good luck,

Gary

Rincon Beach Ventura County  is taking reservations. Go on line: Ventura County Parks and follow guidance to available parks. When I made my reservation for March 30th thru April 1, there were 22 open spaces. Fees are $32 per night during the week and $35 for weekends, plus $1 for pet.

Great news; glad to read that they have improved the reservation system.
