Title: It isn't just refrigerators
Post by: Andy Baird on March 16, 2020, 03:49:19 pm
We all know that absorption refrigerators can malfunction if tilted while in operation. But I ran across a story this morning that shows it isn't just fridges. It seems one of Google's rack-based servers was malfunctioning, and when they sent techs to check it out, they found it was slightly tilted (https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-cloudblog-publish/images/image1_5KDV2JX.max-800x800.jpg), impairing its liquid cooling system and causing it to overheat. Here's the story (https://www.theregister.co.uk/2020/03/16/google_cloudy_server_racks/), if you're interested. Moral: as the song says, "Straighten up and fly right."

Interesting.  I know there were water cooled computers vs air cooled computers (the ones I worked with).  We never got water cooled computers, especially when the water was above the circuit boards (yup, leaks happened so there was a plate to catch any leaks that happened).
Water above electricity is never a good idea because of problems that would be caused by potential leaks, but I guess that the cold water has to be above so that the cooler temperatures fall down upon the circuit boards.

We went through The Dalles Oregon and Google has some sort of a server setup there. The cooling towers for the refrigeration load were massive. I would guess that they weren't necessarily water cooled but the refrigeration was. Would love to look over the mechanical end of the operation.
