Title: Which is gray and which is black?
Post by: jacobjm on July 21, 2019, 06:12:27 am
LD Friends, just got my 1989 LD twin king two days ago.

Which of these is gray and which is black? It’s not marked on the RV.

And which I hook it up can I run the black and then the gray right after it in one session or do I have to connect the hose to each one? It appears you can connect to each one, but not sure if I can just hookup once and flush black then gray on top of each other.

All the best
Jacob

Hello Jacob and congrats on your '89 LD!

1.  The black tank valve is the closest to the driver's door in your picture.
2.  The "rule of thumb" is dumping the blank tank first, then disconnect the sewer hose and connect to the gray tank.  The cleaner gray water helps to clean the hose after dumping the black tank.

Most people will recommend that if you have a campsite with a sewer connection, don't leave either valve open all the time while connected to the sewer.  Then don't dump either tank until it's at least 1/2 full or so.   This procedure is designed to prevent a buildup of material in the bottom of the tanks and to give a good flush when dumping.

I might mention that this Forum has a link to a wonderful resource call the The Lazy Daze Companion (https://lazydazearticles.blogspot.com/).  It's particularly helpful for those of us without an owner's manual.  A second quick reference recently added to the Forum is called a  A Primer For The New RV'er (https://www.lazydazeowners.com/index.php?topic=33437.0) .

Hope this helps.

Right.  The way I remember it is on ours the grey tank's cover has a garden hose size nipple where you could attach a garden hose if you wanted to drain from it on a regular basis.  We never do that.  Good advice on when and how to drain.

Thank you, I will definitely read the primer!

Curious, what is the green and white cap just forward of the black tank dump valve?

Welcome to the forum!

Jacob, do you by chance have a manual for your TK? If so, most of your questions can be answered by reading it. If not, we are happy to help you out.

May I suggest this dump attachment.....
Amazon.com: Valterra 1218.103 Clear 45 Degree T1026-1 Clearview Hose... (https://www.amazon.com/Valterra-T1026-1-ClearView-Hose-Adapter/dp/B000NCS7GE/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2M1U1YWRYYDRD&keywords=clear+dump+hose+connector&qid=1563838829&s=gateway&sprefix=clear+dump+%2Caps%2C429&sr=8-4)

You will be able to see with your own personal eyeballs what is going on with the tanks......

One of the best things I've ever purchased.

There is one or more tons of information about black/gray tank dumping.   IMHO KISS is the best course.

I learned that the hard way. In my mind, the cover nearest the bathroom would be the black tank and the one nearest the kitchen would be the gray tank. I was so very wrong. :-)

I also expected just to have one opening with 2 handles. Again, I was so very wrong.

You guys were right. They are separate tanks. I did my first dump of the black tank today...such a humbling experience.

Depending on the floorplan and where the tanks are located, some rigs have one outlet, for both tanks and others have a separate outlet for each tank..
