Title: Headlights on 1991 Chevy G30?!
Post by: meandthedogs on January 24, 2019, 11:25:29 pm
Sorry for all the posts!

I'm practicing my driving and this is my first time at night. I thought my headlights were on but realized it was only my running lights. When I pull knob all the way towards me the headlights go on but so does the purple light in the dashboard. I assumed that meant high beams but I couldn't adjust them and when I got out to look they look normal, not high.

If purple light is not high beam, then what is high and how do I put them on?

1) One click out is running lights.
2) All the way out headlights and purple light on.
3) Rotate to left brightens running lights.
4). all the way to left turns on interior light.

How do you adjust headlights ??

Hi Lisa. I think your Chevy is old enough, and so am I. The high beam switch is on the floor. So The purple light, later standardized to blue, probably is the high beam indicator. Pushing the button with your foot should turn the high beams off, to just have your regular beams on. Ford and Chrysler also had it this way in the '50's up until the '60's.

"I think your Chevy is old enough, and so am I"

RonB

That would take you out of the 'old' category into the 'ancient' group. I'll bet you remember when the choke was manipulated with a long rod from the dash to the floor.   :D

Old enough to remember not olny the chock advance but had to set the spark advance also.    Yup on our fram we had two old model a trucks.   I was around 11 or 12 when I had to learn how to drive em.  Dad needed me to drive so he could throw the hay bushels.

Both my dad and my friend (who used to own a '49 Chevy), said to check the floor and the windshield wiper handle. I had already tried the handle and there was nothing on floor, so I tried windshield wiper handle again. Apparently I had not pulled it hard enough the first few times, as that did turn out to be the ticket.  It was pretty sticky.
The funny thing is that the high beams are not even as bright as the regular LED headlights on all the new cars.  I can actually look at my headlights, while the new cars blind me. I like the old ones much better.

Thanks all!
