Title: Broken Window Latch
Post by: LazDazGuy on September 15, 2018, 03:10:58 pm
Well, the big window on the driver's side of my front lounge (behind the barrel chairs) had been getting harder to slide open & closed for a while, making the latch more difficult to flip up & down, and a couple months ago, the top third or so of the latch handle broke off in my hand while trying to unlock it.    Since latch was still usable, I've just dealt with it as is, but I'd like to replace the latch. Is that an easy fix, by just unscrewing old latch and install new one?  and if so, where do you order the latch, from the Mother Ship?  Or the window's manufacturer directly?
and yeah, BTW, I have since cleaned out the window tracks on the big windows and lubricated them with a dry silicone spray-- I saw a post earlier about that from Joan & wow, what a difference in sliding the windows -- wish I had done that a lot sooner :-)
thanks for any info!!

I've broken a few of my own. I find that the window MUST be seated fully and firmly so as to not put undue pressure on the latch arm. Your cleaning and lubrication may help with that problem.  ;)

In searching for the proper latch you can run yourself in circles, there are a number of suppliers. The link below will lead you to: "Insulated Sweep Latch", Pt.No. 110-241. That is the most recent replacement I have on hand. You also might Google "Interstate Metal 800-587-3463.

The factory also sells replacement latches.  A few years ago, I was there and bought enough to replace all my main window latches with the ones that latch up and down as opposed to the "swinging down" type.  I'm much happier with those and they weren't very expensive.

thank you Joan, Steve & Mike for your replies!
I'll start by giving the factory a call tomorrow, and then also check out the online resources mentioned.
Sounds like an easy & inexpensive fix -- we like those :-)

No Chris.  I took some photos below.

The first photo is the old style that came with my coach (I left the old style on the bathroom shower window as the new ones stick out a little bit).  The other two photos show the new style in an open and closed position.

"The first photo is the old style..."

Mike

The 'old style' in your first photo is the "Insulated Sweep Latch, Pt. #110-241 that I referenced in my previous post. It can also be had in red for the Emergency Exit window, as referenced in JCT's post previous to mine.  :)

Don't think I've ever seen any of your 'new style'!

Steve, I got them from the factory a few years ago.  I don't know if they still sell them or not.  I like them much better.  They are easier to lock and unlock.

I called the factory this morning and sure enough, they do have the replacement latches, so I sent them a check today for two of them (gotta have a spare!)  @  $6.00 each :-)

Sorry to bump this but I broke my emergency red window latch on my 2008 RB. I *think* I've stumbled upon the right replacement and just wanted to share an up to date link. Can anyone confirm this works for the double pane windows and is the proper latch?

Just received 2 window latches from Hehr  for my 2007, 30ft LD.   Easy remove and install.

That’s good to hear. I was able to order the proper red one from Pelland Enterprises that I linked above if anyone needs a reference. Not sure if they have the black ones as well for the other windows. Mine is stuck at about 10 o’clock position so it’s almost in the unlatched position. Hoping some vise grips can carefully get it In the up/unlocked position before I remove it.

Before you get too heavy handed on those Vice-Grips try this:  With the heel of your hand put enough pressure on the sliding pane to assure yourself that the window is fully closed. Sometimes you have to thump it hard. Then, before using a tool, see if you can move the lever on the latch. It quite often works for me!   :o

Excellent advice as always. Will be sure to attempt to move it without the use of tools!

Got a chance to do the install tonight. Very quick and easy and I can confirm Pelland sells the proper red emergency latch. I also bought the “new style” Hehr latches for the other windows and they too are a good easy swap out. I also prefer them over my originals. Make sure you use your original screws and unscrew them slowly or you may end up looking for the screw on the couch cushions.  ::)
