Title: How to find the right lid for the exit hatch
Post by: Alice on September 05, 2018, 05:56:06 pm

  UPDATE

  THE LID DOES FIT!

  Thanks to Rodney Helfrich, I figured out I had made a huge rookie mistake, I was not sliding the hinges together properly.

For a 17 3/8 inch by 24 5/8 inch roof opening you need:

Heng's part # 58621-C2 for the insert and lid

Heng's part # 90008-C1 for the lid only

(watch that you don't order Part # 90088-C1 by mistake)

For the correct Heng’s part numbers, based on your roof hole size, go to:
Class A Customs Elkhart Indiana - RV Parts - Accessories - and More (http://www.classacustoms.com)
And click on “escape hatches” in the grey area on the right hand side of the page.
That page comes up with both the lids and inserts.
Check descriptions under items for roof hole size.

If you get the proper replacement lid you might want to take it to a good sheet metal fabrication shop and have them make an aluminum copy. I did this a couple of years ago because (God forbid) you are caught in a hail storm or any other thing falling on the lid that could break the plastic you would have to repeat finding a new lid. I did the same thing for the plastic cover over the refrigerator roof vent for the same reason. Both have worked out well.

I replaced my exit hatch a few years ago. If I recall, older LD's like mine use the "old hengs" lid. Helpfully, the exit hatch frame had the month/year it was made stamped on it (in my case 1986), which helped make a positive I'd if the parts once I found an explanation of what year the hatch design was revised.

In my case the hatch was starting to crack and I was worried about snow loads doing it in

Lazy daze has the escape hatch replacement !!  Not sure about the metal workings, but they do have the lids.

We now have a beautifully repaired 1990 multiplan that should not turn into a seeve during a Morro Bay rainstorm!!  And he has all new vents and fantastic fans And a 2005 rear bath with an unshattered side window.  Yay Mothership!!!

Exit hatch came today.

The good news is;
 it is made of the thick high quality Elixir plastic.
It is the correct size and cap height for the Elixir hatch system

The bad news is;
The hinge SHAPE on new lid is not compatible with the receiver on the Elixir hatch.
The center crank guide on new cap is shorter than the original
The rivet holes on the new hinge plate, do not align with those on the old one.
The cranking hardware on the new item is a horrible brittle metal.

I have to decide;
If I’m just going to put the entire Heng’s system in
Or if I’m going to ‘cut and paste’ the old hinge plate onto the new cap.
(already popped rivets on both hinge plates)

I don’t know if;
The old hardware will fit the new cap and/or system, I hope so!!

Ran out of daylight, will let you know tomorrow morning.
