Title: Tomorrow’s the day, we pick up our LD!
Post by: Tiger (Clark) on July 15, 2018, 10:25:58 pm
Hoping we have all our ducks 🦆 lined up, insurance in force, and a safe return home. I read somewhere that the first 24 hours anyone drives a vehicle new to them, to be extra cautious, and I will be.

We started off looking at Class B’s at last years RV show, due to our narrow driveway, but Kristy talked me into a class C.

She thought the small size of a Class B, a small bathroom & and lack of big windows was to limiting, she said “I’m not going to enjoy hanging out in here”

The first time I saw a LDaze on the showroom floor I was hooked, those huge windows, and it oozes quality. The more we read about how they were made, how long it took to built and all the postings here we felt it was right for us.

Thank you all for your answers to our “rookie” questions, and encouragement, I just hope it fits, it’s going to be tight!

P.S. How much can we charge for “tours” 😎

Ok...So Steve recently asked if we could spell Spy...hmmm, now I wonder can we all spell PARTY at Tigers NEW Lazy Daze? 🎉🎉🎉🎉

So it’s true...There is a Christmas in July.

When we picked up our New RB, I was nervous about driving Miss B. Haven home on the darn 605 during rush (can you spell bumper-to-bumper?) hour traffic, so I didn’t. Instead we had a nice dinner near the Mothership and found a Dollar Theatre nearby and enjoyed (I was thinking about the rig sitting in the parking lot the whole time) Hotel Transylvania 2.

I was glad to see the rig still in the parking lot. And the wait was worth it. Traffic was minimal and we made it home in one piece.

However you do it, enjoy the drive back to Long Beach. Don’t be too upset when you see our LD sitting in your new driveway. It’s gorgeous. 😝

Congratulations in advance! My guess is your cheeks will be somewhat sore tomorrow evening from smiling so hard all day long driving your new LD :)

So, how long was your total wait and if you had to place your order again would you have done anything differently?

Thanks, It was about a year I think, I don’t know what I would change, got to go camping in it to find out

Kent we are tenting the house for termites, so don’t come over lol Something tells me this fib won’t work.

So do we break champagne 🍾 over the bow? How do “Lazy Dazers” do it?

The tradition of christening a new ship for good luck and safe travel goes way back. Many ancient seafaring societies had their own ceremonies for launching a new ship. The Greeks wore olive branch wreaths around their heads, drank wine to honor the gods, and poured water on the new boat to bless it. The Babylonians sacrificed an ox, the Turks sacrificed a sheep, and the Vikings and Tahitians offered up human blood....BLOOD??

How high is that roof eave?
Have someone behind the rig to guide you into its niche the first time or two.
Congratulations.
Drink a toast to its homecoming, not forgetting the libation to the gods. Pour a little on the drive in front of it.

"How high is that roof eave?"

From the looks of that new driveway it appears that you have a golden opportunity to install 30amp service at the side of the house and possibly a water line as well.   ;)

I have never understood why we make a conscious decision to back our vehicles into constrained spaces with limited visibility and pull out into very unconstrained areas with excellent visibility. We are risking much backing in and gaining nothing pulling out.

Logic says pulling forward into a constrained space and taking advantage of great visibility is always a good choice whereas backing up with limited visibility into a larger unconstrained area is beneficial also. We are gaining a great deal of control and safety pulling in. Why do we oppose this common sense?

I have read so many accounts of people backing into things over the years including other people - backing up into a tight area is logically the absolute last choice to make.  :o

As a proud Cal State, Long Beach grad, glad to see Long Beach represented!!!!!!  Congrats!!!  Still remember picking up ours back in 2013...christened with a trip to Zion when I saw somebody cancelled their spot there and we grabbed it....still working full-time so we use ours for vacations and camping trips....headed to the local mountains (we also live in So Cal) with our granddaughter in a few weeks.....when she was 4 years old (now 7) she began referring to the LD as "her motorhome" :)

IT FITS!! The Lazy Daze fits! What a big day, glad that is behind me.

We got us early to drive to the Mothership. The “Davis Tigers” LD was still being prepped. When I spoke to Vince, we were joking around, so asked him to treat me half as good as he treats Kent H, and I would be happy.
He mentioned something he wishes was in the manual, he said if we go beach camping, to wash the rig off, ASAP on our return,, to prevent future salt/sand/moisture  issues I think.

Things went pretty well, after the extensive 2.5 hour orientation, we found the day/night shades needed a minor adjustment so we went and had lunch. While that was being done, we walked a couple minutes over to the restaurant row nearby, a 3 minute walk. They have a Panda Express, Subway, McDonalds, DQ and a fast food type Mexican place we wanted to try they recommended, but it was too hot to eat outside. It’s right past the Trailer Park Estates, to the left of LD.

The orientation started about an hour later than planned, so we amused ourselves in the showroom models, the kids were estatic, finally seeing what we have been talking about for so long. Playing house, talking about future camping and beach trips we have planned. We will start with some day beach trips, then Malibu State Park, then Leo Carrrlio, the Crystal Cove etc. We hope to camp/do a beach day, monthly once or twice thru January so far.

We mentioned, then forgot to get the windshield wrap around thing, and forgot to get the snap on vent covers, so I have to call tomorrow and make a plan to get them. Also a couple cabinet doors need minor stain touch up.

Well it’s been a big day, it fits in the driveway, past the gates, electrical boxes, rain gutters and a few things we were worried about. We may have to trim one of our house eves a little. Right now it feels like it was worth the wait. It’s allot to keep track of right now, hopefully it will get easier. The learning  curve is steep in the beginning.

We are hoping that camping with our teenagers and their friends will lead to memorable, wonderful family times together, that’s the point of all of this. Hope to meet some of you camping, stop by and say hello, maybe we can have some coffee and conversation!

Congratulations and let your journey begin!

Are the solar panels being mounted differently now? This is the first time I have seen them this way. Previously I have seen them mounted longitudinally adjacent to the AC which may result in the panel being partially shaded.

The pic in the driveway answers the Chet's question on why back it into a narrow enclosed space:  "So you can load it conveniently".

Put eave trimming on your to-do list before you trim it with the LD.

"Steep learning curve" is a good thing, mapping knowledge increase over time.  Learning quickly in other words.

Tiger,

Vince didn’t grimace when you mentioned my name I hope. I’m sure he’d prefer that you steer clear of you-haul trailers...😖

The kids are going to love the LD.

It’s been a long wait, day and you need to get to dreamin’ about all those LDA’s (Lazy Daze Adventures). Don’t forget to enjoy a burger at Jalama Beach. Just a short drive up the coast.

See you all at Serrano some time. I’ve got that place booked through November.

Congratulations.

Good question Joel. I wish I could tell you. It just grew by one so that’s two that I’m certain of. Now if Tiger just throws that BBQ for us locals, we’ll have a better count.

At this point it is definitely a work in progress. Any suggestions?

Oh, my goodness!!  In the photo of the NEW rig being pulled out from the factory "workshop" (3/4 side view), there is a rig in the background in a bay that looks very much like our BLUE!!  (1990 multi-plan).  Can't blow up the photo enough to tell!!

So many memories with the kids, then grandkids in that old rig.  We decided to restore it!

Happy memories to you in your new rig!

I have read so many accounts of people backing into things over the years including other people - backing up into a tight area is logically the absolute last choice to make.  :o

Pulling straight into a tight spot may be the safest way but sometimes parking that way doesn't allow access or the door faces the wrong way.
With properly set mirrors and a backup camera, a skilled driver can back into almost any spot that has adequate clearance.
Multi-cameras systems are now being installed in some rigs and should ease the task.
The basic rule that when backing into any tight spot, it is mandatory to get out and to take a look beforehand.

Backing into our previous home's driveway require pulling mirrors in to get into the backyard.
That was fun. We made sure to buy a house with a big, wide driveway.

Larry

Title: Re: Tomorrow’s the day, we pick up our LD!

Backing into tight spots allows for space to turn and maneuver the front wheels of the motorhome or tow vehicle to get back out.  If one backs a long trailer into a space, you can almost always get out.  If you go in front-end first, you can get easily stuck. Even with vehicles as small as our crew cab diesel, I taught my kids that if they can put it into a space backward in a parking lot, they can always get back out.  If they drive in frontward, they may have to wait for the person behind them to pull out to get out of the spot.

The ability to maneuver by steering from the back  is one of the reasons that forklifts have the turning wheels in the back.

The same thing applies to the motorhome getting into a tight place.

Well HiLola, I use very specific,  expensive calibrated instrument MIRROR, only available from the LBCALDA  (Long Beach California Lazy Daze Association) or the 99 cent store.
I have included a picture of this this classified instrument, please don’t share with anyone.

Here is what we use, to dock our “Space Shuttle LD” into an impossible space. FYI we had to pull in both truck mirrors to make it thru the tight spots, gate posts, electrical panel, gutters etc. We went old school and had 2 spotters, my son and his grandpa 😘🍾

Our “secret”’ handshake is a closely guarded secret, but the way we greet each other is to slowing rub our thumb and first two fingers together, before we shake hands, to see if any of us have any money left after becoming a Lazy Dazer....😎

I’m having a blast setting up my rig, can you tell? Ok hope this helps the new folks 👀
Y’all ready for some interior pictures?

Hi Lola on the WIDE part of our driveway, we have 3” on driver side clearance, and 16” on other side with BOTH mirrors pulled in. When I pull our passenger side mirror we have 10” ....it gets tighter getting thru our gates and by RV electrical panel even though I sunk it in as much as I could.

This is where our driveway opens up in the rear, near the BBQ/Hottub area😎

The side door is in a good area for loading/unloading, if we went with a longer rig, the side door may have been located too far forward, we just made a lucky guess. We missed our house eves by 2-3”, another lucky guess, I should go play the Lotto 🏆🎲

Personally I pull nose in with the LD. Backing in would be preferred but that puts the coach door facing “the neighbor down the block”. 😫 Besides it also puts the coach door outside the kitchen door. Good for quick loads and fast get-aways in the event of one of those notorious California earthquakes.

So nose in for the LD and back in for the sedan, which doesn’t happen often anymore. At least I’ve got the drive/park/way. I think LB no longer allows RV parking on the street without a permit.

Poly High, LBCC, and CSULB. Long Beach born and raised. Thank goodness for the LD and a quick escape from this lovely city. I seem to remember LB’s population in the late 50’s at around 60,000. Now it’s almost 10 times that. Now that’s a “tight fit”.

My son Hunter I'm so proud of is a junior at CSULB, doing great in Computer engineering/science. He loves it and is really good at it, so we are hoping he has a bright future. Yes, he already wants to 'borrow" my LD, uhhh son, It may be a long time before that happens. I'll tell him he has to buy a house first, that may delay him for awhile.

I was not only on the surf team (non NCAA sanctioned), I actually received a modest scholarship from the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA), and yes, took surfing and sailing as my PE requirements, needed to boost my GPA!  At the time we competed against mostly So Cal team UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, UCLA, USC, Pepperdine, San Diego State, etc... and the Hawaiian schools.  Not sure if they still have team?  I was talking to California Assemblyman Ian Calderon and he was on the team in the late 90's!  Only in So Cal!  I'll look for your 27 MB along the coast and good luck to you and the family.

Just picked up my LD for the second time, it has been at the Mothership for about a week, having 2 cabinets restained, two were dark on the edges when we picked it up, LD offered to fix it.  A few other minor things too. When I called they said bring it in that day, and redoing cabinets that fast was impressive too.

They also fixed a very 1”x2” small rear scratch, Vince said I did good, putting the raspberry scratch on the trim, not the sides or window area, he fixed it for FREE, I was very appreciative. Vince takes a couple minutes explaining any questions I have and I appreciate that very much. I He said I even know how to put a “good” scratch on it, much better than Kent H small “hole” he put in his door LOL Now, if I want it fixed perfectly, that will cost money 💰 to fix

I had a good overall experience at LD, I did not like paying for it BEFORE, I saw the interior of the finished rig, but just hoped for the best. Like someone posted recently, its a manufacturing plant that happens to sell directly to the public, not a fancy showroom, I prefer this because I feel most of the time, service wise especially, I trust Vince to know what he is talking about.

Now for the possibility bad news, when I tried to get SIRUS satellite radio, I couldn’t, so when I asked I was told you MUST specify this antenna when you order it, it cannot be added later??  I was told I turned that option down, HUH?  This LD is loaded, why would I NOT get an antenna?  I’ve ordered many trucks, and DID NOT have to also order this special antenna that cannot be added after, I was told. So another thing to research, if anyone has a clue how to do it, please post.  Maybe a local stereo installation shop can help us.

FYI if you are in the middle of getting your LD built, and getting the included FORD radio/CD unit, PLEASE add the antenna NOW, not later

We are also trying to figure out how to install Weboost system/antenna, without making any roof holes.

We are going camping soon, now what did I forget? 🐯👍

Tiger,

That’s quite a raspberry. Glad it’s gone. Whatcha hit?

On our maiden voyage to Bryce Canyon, we pulled into our site which was a pull through. In the morning I noticed I was up against the branches of a tree. No noticeable scratches, but so far I haven’t done it again.

Punching a hole in the coach door at the you-haul was an unfortunate event. Honestly, I knew that trailer hitch was there when I pulled in but I swear it jumped out at me just as I was backing out. Vince did admonish me by advising that the hole would have been better placed “just a little bit higher” above the door frame. Next time. 😖 I knew I was getting a bit too comfortable driving the rig around town.

https://youtu.be/N0nyOyrprIs

I’ve no advice on the SIRUS antenna issue. Never bothered with “Paid Radio”. Honestly I prefer the silence as I drive and only occasionally play a CD. The LD’s quite ride gives me time to think. This is another reason that I prefer my sister to ride in the back. 😳
How’s the adage go? “Silence is golden...”

Our Cell Booster antenna is magnetic and gets attached to the sat dish once we arrive at camp. Its lead runs through the drivers window (partially opened). Works for me, so far. I gather this isn’t possible with your booster.

Glad Vince got your Boo-Boo fixed. Some things we just have to learn the hard way. That stinks too. Now that you’ve gotten that out of the way it should be smooth sailin’ all the way. “Don’t get cocky” and safer travels.

Kent

There are only  few ways to get wire from the roof inside. Through a window, down the refrigerator vent or by using a marine through-fitting.
Holes in the roof are not an issue is done correctly. Your roof already has many holes in it. Check out your new LD to see how they sealed the the lead-in cable from the solar panels, not exactly high tech.

I have used dozens of Blue Sea cable clams, for antennas and back cameras and have never had anyone report a problem. They allow you to place the hole where it is best. I bed them in 3M-5200 Fast Cure polyurethane.
If a product is going to work and survive in a marine environment, it will work well in a motorhome.

These fittings have worked well for me. The one on our back camera is 13 years old and still in good shape.
I used another one for the large diameter cellular antenna cable.

Thank you so much Larry, this is the “tip” I needed to go forward 👏🐯

I may just set my future weboost up temporarily at first when I camp, but wanted a plan once I think I want to install it.

Kent, the cinder block wall opposite my house, jumped out and kissed my LD. Actually I turned too sharply in my tight driveway, and the rear swung the opposite way of course. Kristy and I talked about not doing that at a gas pump, but learned it can happen anywhere, even with spotters. I had 2 spotters, one in front and back and should have taken it super slow, I will from now on

Tiger,

If you haven’t already experienced a steep driveway (gas station, supermarket etc), take care. The rear skids on the LD can easily bottom out in a steep driveway. It’s advisable to take such entrances and exits at an angle and not straight on.

When at Serrano and heading over to Big Bear for supplies, I head to Vons and avoid Stater Brothers for that very reason. The sound of those skids touching down sends a chill through my spin every time.

For XM radio I used a RoadyII (I'm sure there are newer xm only receiver kits that do this) that plugs into the auxiliary input.  You might have an antenna input on the back side of your radio for the xm antenna but I am not sure the radio input for the kit antennas are the same as the one for the kit antennas. The kit antenna is held in place by a magnet.  I place the antenna in the overhead bunk's vent.  My LD has an escape hatch and I just rout the wire through the screen.  The antenna is held in place with a steel washer that sandwiches the screen between the antenna and the washer.
For the run from the cab's radio I ran the wire:
the run from the curtain slide for a to the vent opening and the plug for the XM receiver are the only places you see the wire.  I'm sure for a more professional finish along the roof to the vent there are conduit strips that would hide the wire.  I have an escape hatch for a vent so the run is very short.

The antenna works great at this location.  The plastic vent cover does not bother the reception.  I'll try to take pictures soon and post them if your interested.

The nice thing about the above setup is I can take the XM radio subscription from car to car to home by just moving the portable XM receiver.

A big sledgehammer should make quick work of that cement wall.

Do it when your neighbor in on vacation.  Bad wall, bad wall!  :D

1st actual camping review, scheduled an easy (not!) first camping night near Lake Elizabeth, over the grapevine midday, with lots of trucks on the road, not too much fun! LD seems a little wobbly at 55-60, I know some driving experience and possible add ons can hopefully help this. I did gain more confidence as the trip continued to SF/San Leandro area to stay 6 nights with my HS best friend. Kristy and kids are flying in tonite to do tourist stuff in SF. We were told to take the BART, cancel the rental car. Much like LA, you can hardly get there, hard to get home, impossible to find a parking spot, lots of car break-ins, even parked at very nice hotels, sounds fun, huh? I did live in SF 40 years ago...glad my kids are black & brown belts in Kempo  karate

So back to the LD, this is the first time not camping in the driveway, the 27mid bath WAS HUGE when we bought it, but now has shrunk since we filled it with all the stuff we may need "in case". Not sure where Kristy and the kids and their stuff will go, hope they packed light. I'm so happy I didn't buy another Sportmobile or smaller class B as long as I have family that wants to camp. The rear windows are awesome, since I'm a little claustrophobic, don't tell anyone.

Things I could use, a cheaper small, short SmartPlug, as I'm parked in not the best area,  but hey it's free! I've got a standard 110v extension cord from my friends house. I guess I could make one, If I can find the female plug in part, so I don't worry about my longer SmartPlug cord disappearing on future trips. Got a squeaky roof fan. Love the LD dual window covers, found one above the door 👏

Yesterday we took my friends 30' boat out to SF bay, took some great pictures of bay & Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, AT&T Park and SF. Then we had numerous problems/breakdowns. I'm sure we will laugh about it one day, the open water is very unforgiving and dangerous when you lose power. We had to be rescued, cost my friend $1000 in gas/tow charges because he wasn't a member of the boat resucue tow service for $175 a year, lesson leaned if you have and OLD boat!

This is a great adventure!

"We had to be rescued,..."

Tell me that the 'Rescue Boat' is not an inflatable!  Or is that pillow looking thing a big fender?   :o

The guy on the impressive looking inflatable boat claimed it cost $250,000! It was the best looking inflatable boat I’ve ever seen in person! Had 2- Yamaha huge 250’s outboards on the back, they charge $350 per hour plus ⛽️!

It's a rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB).

Once you have fully loaded your new LD and put a couple thousand miles on it, weight it, to adjust the tire pressure and then have ithe front end aligned.
This should help increase the drivability and tracking. It made a big difference when our LD was new.
You should not have to add aftermarket parts to have it handle correctly.

Thanks Larry, we just all 4 camped for the first time in the SF Bay Area, loving the LD 27MB, thanks to all of you that suggested back in the beginning NOT to go smaller!

We discovered a weird and amazing antique huge arcade place walking on the pier, stuff from when my parents were teens!

The ONLY thing we need now is to add 2-3 more bathrooms to the floorplan, should I call Vince at the Mothership? How many 100 dollar bills should I bring? 🤔🐯🙏🏼

Kent congratulations on your retirement, I retired 1.5 years ago, and I’m still trying to get it right

Perhaps you might want to consider   this (http://lamartrailer.net/products/porta-potty-trailer-xp/)
Added bonus of extra storage space,  always a plus.  ;)

Great to hear and see your maiden voyage went well!  I'll be posting my report shortly (picked up our 24 TK on the 26th of July and just returned from 10 days in the Eastern Sierras).  In regards to the satellite radio, you can unplug OEM (fm/am) radio antenna and plug-in a satellite antenna with the magnetic base.  I did that when I had my truck camper on our Dodge truck.  I simply threaded the antenna wire through the conduit at the door hinge and mounted (magnet) the antenna on the hood of the truck close to the windshield.  I believe even with the LD bunk overhang you'll have enough clearance for good reception (our truck camper bunk was slightly over the windshield and we had excellent reception (never lost the signal).
