My new to me Lazy Daze has the old 460 in it and the air pump-smog pump seems a bit loud. One mechanic told me they all are loud in that year (1996) and don't worry about it. Another mechanic said the bearings are probably going out. Anyone in here with a 460 have experience with this? By the way I !ove this old motor! Plenty of power and I'm getting 10mpg out of it with it's Flowmaster exhaust kit.
Where the pump connects to the exhaust, there are in-line check valves. Pull the valves and see if they are working. If one is stuck open, exhaust gasses have probably fried the pump, so replace both valves and the pump before the pump seizes up.

You seem knowledgeable on this so let me ask you what happens if it seizes up? I'm no mechanic but I think this is just smog related and wouldn't make me call a tow truck. Am I mistaken?
If the pump seizes up, the pulley will stop turning, and the belt driving it will start smoking, eventually melting and breaking, and possibly catching on fire. My experience is with a Chevy, which had a v-belt I could cut and still drive - sans alternator. If you have a serpentine belt, you will not be able to drive without the belt.

Mines a belt like your Chevy that drives the air pump and alternator. Been doing some research on this and supposedly you can get a shorter belt and just leave the air pump out of the loop. Might look into this more but I'm taking a trip to the Oregon coast in a couple of weeks and will take my chances for now.
