The install was to replace the cigarette lighter outlet on the driver's side rear couch in a twin king. DW complained that that outlet bothered her head when she was sleeping. I tended to agree - when in use it stuck out three or more inches.
I replaced a couple of my 115v outlets with ones that had integrated USB ports. Home improvement stores have them.

Not sure I fully understand your question, but I have this plugged into the dash cigarette lighter.

Great idea. This will be my next project. In today's world one can not have to many usb ports. This seems to be a good deal.

The USB ports will only be powered when on shore power or when powered by an inverter.
IMO, the USB outlets should be powered strictly by 12-volts, so they are useful in all situations .

When I installed the 1st USB charger (one more to be done) this is the product that I used. Along with the appropriate wiring, in-line fuse and quick-disconnect it is mounted inside the wardrobe, in it's own box, in my 30'IB, sourced from the back side of a wall mounted reading light with 12vDC. ;D

I’m confused by the seeming need by folks to have dedicated USB chargers cut into their walls. I have four 12v outlets and when in camp I have USB plugs that cost a few bucks in most of them.
Seems like a far simpler solution to me. I must be missing something.

That's what we use too, but some LD installed 12V outlets protrude excessively, due to thinner interior wall and clearances. Replacing them with USB functionality with little or no protrusion would be nice.

In the rear bedroom of my 30'IB there is one 12v receptacle in a niche provided for a TV. If you want to use this connection as a USB charging source and you need to recharge your Smartphone or Kindle while reclining in bed, then it requires that you drape the cord across the walkway, up the length of the bed to where the device is located. This can lead to lots of cussing and other exclamations during the night, should you forget and get tangled in the cord on your way to the pot. :-(
My solution was to open a ½" hole on the interior wall of a closet to pass the 12v wiring from a reading lamp (already in place), down the inner wall to an accessible location and there mount a plastic box, wherein I fixed the USB charger. Everything is neat, clean and safe from harm, including the ½" rubber grommet through the inner wall. All wires are encased in a wire loom. No wall cutting, you would not even know it's there if it weren't shown to you.

In my case, they're only used when on shore power or on the rare occasions when I use my external generator to charge the house batteries. I'm trying to avoid using an inverter at all since the AH capacity of my house batteries is relatively low and we don't have much in the house that runs off of AC anyway. No microwave, no TV, and the wife uses a french press. Our needs might be different if we were full-timers.
I had to replace my vintage 1983 outlets anyway, as they were borderline dangerous and worn out, so the slight premium to add USB to the outlets was a no-brainer for me.
I also installed two Blue Sea dual USB outlets in the coach above the dinette, one in place of the cigarette lighter in the cab, and one on a blank panel that replaced the cassette radio- all on the 12V house batteries. That's eight USB outlets on DC in addition to 4 on the AC outlets. Between the two systems, I think I have USB power covered for our various electronic devices.
We added usb (12v) and 120 outlets - to avoid draping cords around.
Only usb in our older rig was the cigarette lighter in the cab. 120v outlets were in kitchen, by entry door cabinet and one in rear of lounge area.
Easy to come off existing 12v lights in the TK lounge area, or come off the existing 120v receptacle in the TK area.

I'm in favor of lots of outlets. The question is what kind. USB outlets charge USB devices, of which there are a lot, but they're limited to two devices per outlet and 5-10 watts per device. I prefer 12 V outlets, with USB adapters if needed. A 12 V outlet can deliver a hundred watts or more, and can charge up to four USB devices at once (see below). And it can power a lot of things that can't be run from USB.
Just off the top of my head, here are some of the 12 V devices I own that cannot be powered by a USB outlet, but can be plugged into a 12V outlet:
- MacBook Pro
- Caframo table fan
- Ryobi One+ battery charger
- AA/AAA battery charger
- camera battery chargers (two different ones)
- electric blanket
- trouble light
- Wilson cellular booster
- Dometic CFX-050 portable refrigerator
... and I'm probably leaving out a few. None of these can be powered from a USB port.
On the other hand, any USB device I own can be powered from a 12V outlet, and I can charge up to four at a time with a good quality adapter (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LJK4HE0/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1). I can also plug in a small inverter (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003Q54V88/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) to run my WaterPik in the bathroom or my portable printer in the dinette/office.
Bottom line: 12V outlets may be old technology, but they are a lot more versatile than USB chargers.
