Good read, we tend to think of gasoline as a commodity. I always thought independents used the same gas as the big boys as identified in the article. We buy most of our gas at Costco, I wonder which supplier they use.

This is the from  link used in the referenced article. COSTCO is among the good guys.
I wonder about WalMart; one of my more frequent stops while traveling out of town.

Been using the least expensive gasoline that I can find (without driving all over town) for over 50 years.  Have never had an engine breakdown, failure, or any issues stemming from carbon deposits.....  Guess I've just been lucky!

Hi,

From reading the list of companies Costco is included as one of the Top Tier Brands.

Yikes!  I've been using USA when fueling while at home as there's one a block from my storage facility and it has easy access and good pricing.  Guess I'll either regularly add Techron or change to a less convenient station. No signs of problems yet, though, on my 2006 at 50k. --Jon

My experience with grocery store brands has been poor. Twice in the last 18 months I have had to drain tanks and filter out large amounts of water. I assume Walmart will always find a way to get suppliers to cut corners beyond anyone else. This report is not surprising. Especially in the boat or on the road when a breakdown is more challenging than at home I pay the extra 10 cents or so to get top tier gas. The app Gas Buddy labels the Top Tier stations along the route. A nice tool.

Thanks, a copy has been printed and placed in the LD.
Used with with the Gas Buddy app, we should be able to find Top Tier gas on our travels this summer.

I've been using Arco for years. I think it's the BP brand. When I was filling up last week I noticed Arco was 11cents cheaper then 76 across the street.

I was surprised that none of the truck stop gas like Flying J, Loves or T/A were on the list.

The Gas Buddy app shows whether a station is Top Tier or not.

Jo, isn't Arco the one that doesn't take credit cards? Saves them as much as 3%, about a dime.

Federal Gasoline Regulations | Gasoline Standards | US EPA (http://www.epa.gov/gasoline-standards/federal-gasoline-regulations)

Gas is gas is gas.   The differences are based on local.  The refineries formulate the gasoline based on the local use area.  For instance gasoline brought on a mountaintop with snow on the ground is different than gasoline brought near the coast at sea level with temperatures in the 80's.

But bottom line EPA regulates gasoline.
